Outstanding Documented Factory Engraved Colt Official Police Double Action Revolver with Pearl Grips and Factory Letter - Serial no. 548601, 38 cal., 6 inch round bbl., blue finish, pearl grips. This is an outstanding example of a rare, factory engraved Colt Official Police double action revolver. According to Sutherland and Wilson on p. 349 of “The Book of Colt Firearms”, only approximately 350 out of the total production of 400,000 of this model were factory engraved, making a documented example like this incredibly scarce. The included factory letter confirms the current configuration including the pearl grips and “grade 2” engraving, as well as shipment to A. Baldwin Co. in New Orleans, Louisiana on 12 January 1928. The revolver shows masterfully executed floral scroll engraving with a stippled background on 75% of the surfaces, including the barrel, frame, and cylinder. The engraving was almost certainly executed by Colt factory Master Engraver, Wilbur Glahn, who carried out the majority of Colt’s most deluxe engraving from around 1920 to 1950. The top of the barrel is marked with the standard two-line address and patent dates while the left side has the model and caliber markings. The left rear of the frame is marked
with the Rampant Colt and there is a Colt “VP” verified roof near the trigger guard. It is fitted with a blade front sight, groove rear sight, and a pair of smooth pearl grips with Colt medallions at the tops.
CONDITION: Excellent, retains 98% plus of the bright original high
polish blue finish with only the slightest edge wear and crisp engraving overall. The grips are also excellent with only the slightest handling marks. Mechanically excellent. If you are looking to add a benchmark double action Colt to your collection, look no farther!
Estimate: 9,500 - 16,000
