W. Wagner Double Barrel Flintlock Carriage Pistol with Relief Carved and Silver Wire Inlaid Stock Formerly in the Visser Collection
- NSN, 62 cal., 8 1/8 inch solid rib bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. This late 18th century flintlock double barrel pistol from W. Wagner
in Haarlem, Netherlands, has side by side smoothbore barrels with a half-moon blade front sight on the rib which is engraved with floral and
dot patterns, a dished standing breech with floral engraving, “W. WAGNER/A HAARLEM”
signed on the rounded locks which feature frizzen rollers, double triggers, brass furniture with rococo style floral patterns in raised relief, a raised relief carved rococo scroll design around the upper tang, and silver wire inlays on the back of the wrist. Unusually, the left trigger is shorter than the right trigger indicating that this pistol was intended to be shot with the left hand. It is featured in “The Visser Collection, Vol. 1 Part 4” by G. de Vries and B.J. Martens, cat. no. 922, pages 546-547. CONDITION: Very good with silver gray patina and mild pitting on the iron, attractive aged patina on the brass furniture, and general mild overall wear. The stock is fine and has crisp carving, minor flakes around the lock mortises, and some scrapes and dings. Mechanically fine. Provenance: The Henk L. Visser Collection; Property of a Gentleman. Engraved and Relief Carved Lambert Goffin Double Barrel Flintlock Pistol Formerly in the Visser Collection - NSN, 50 cal., 6 5/8 inch solid rib bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. This pistol by Lambert Goffin (1768-1794) of Boileduc (‘s-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands) in the late 18th century is featured on pages 544 and 545 of “The Visser Collection, Vol. 1, Part 4” by G. de Vries and B.J. Martens. Goffin was born in Liege and apprenticed to Paquaij Hoterat and worked at the Culemborg factory for around nine years and became a burgher of Den Bosch in November of 1768. It features side by side smoothbore barrels with a concave rib, dished standing breech with light engraving, “L GOFFIN/A BOILEDVC” re-engraved on the locks, “1701” inventory number on the stock, raised relief floral scroll carving around the upper tang and between the entry pip and trigger guard finial, tear drop flats, Rococo floral scroll patterns on the brass furniture, and a ramrod with horn tip. CONDITION: Good with the iron cleaned to a silver-gray patina along with some faint pitting, aged patina on the brass mounts, and general minor overall wear. The refinished and repaired stock is also good and has a sliver missing by the right cock, crisp carving, smooth finish, and some faint repaired chips and slivers. Mechanically fine. Large Engraved Brass C. Moore London Flintlock Boxlock Pistol with Snap Bayonet - NSN, 55 cal., 8 inch round bbl., bright finish, walnut grips. “C. MOORE.LONDON.PATENT” marked on
top of the barrel, light engraving along some of the edges, and stars and a crescent
moon engraved on both the oval silver wrist escutcheon and pommel cap. A spring loaded “snap” bayonet is attached on the left of the barrel and secured at the tip with a sliding catch located on the left side plate, a walnut ramrod with horn tip is fitted along the right side
of the barrel, and with a sliding half-cock safety. CONDITION: Fine with attractive golden aged patina on the brass, brown patina and some
scattered areas of light pitting on the iron, bright silver surfaces, and defined engraving overall.
The grip is also fine with a mild dent and a scratch on the left, and some scattered minor handling marks. Mechanically excellent. Estimate: 1,800 - 2,750

Engraved and Gold Accented Wallis Flintlock Pistol - Serial no. 967, 52 cal., 7 1/8 inch round bbl., brown/gold/casehardened/blue/silver finish, walnut stock. This c. 1810 pistol would have been an exceptional sidearm for an officer or civilian English gentleman. It is a good size for a belt or possibly in a large pocket of an overcoat. The Wallis gunmakers of Hull, George Wallis
Sr. (1733-1803) followed by his sons, including George Wallis Jr. (1775-1830), were well-known gunmakers in Yorkshire. In 1811, Wallis Jr. advertised that he was continuing the family arms business as well as “Wallis’s Museum” which contained coins, medals, and antique guns from around the world. The smoothbore, Damascus barrel has a bead front sight, burst engraving with gold inlaid accent, a gold inlaid star on the short flat at the breech, pair of gold bands at the breech end, gold vent line, “967” just below the vent, and “WALLIS,” London proofs, and “NARROW/TWISTED” marked on the bottom of the barrel. The lock has a gold-lined “HULL” makers mark below the rainproof pan, roller on the frizzen spring, and some floral and martial engraving. The trigger guard and ramrod pipes are iron and have coordinating engraving. The forend cap, wedge escutcheons, and buttcap are silver, and the latter has burst engraving. The wrist escutcheon is gold. The figured walnut stock has fine checkering on the wrist with double line borders. The wooden ramrod’s iron tip screws off revealing a covered worm, and the tip can then be screwed onto the other iron end piece. CONDITION: Very good with attractive Damascus twist patterns and 50% of the brown finish remaining on the barrel, bright original gold, aged patina on the silver, dark brown patina on the standing breech and lock, mostly gray patina on the trigger guard and ramrod entry pipe, and minor overall wear including some light pitting. The stock is also fine and has attractive striped figure that pairs well with the Damascus patterns and also has crisp checkering, some faint checks, and a few scattered minor dings and scratches. Mechanically fine. Estimate: 1,400 - 2,250

Engraved Pair of Broomhead Flintlock Rifled Officer’s Pistols with Snap Bayonets -A) Broomhead Flintlock Pistol - NSN, 65 cal., 9 3/8 inch octagon bbl., brown/ bright/blue finish, walnut stock. These early 19th century flintlock officer’s pistols feature rifled barrels in .65 caliber British carbine bore and are mounted with folding snap bayonets. They would have been excellent for defense. Although they lack sights, you can line up shots using the screws on the bayonets and the bayonet catches on the upper tangs. The locks have burst and floral pattern engraving, frizzen spring rollers, stepped tails, sliding half-cock safeties, and “BROOMHEAD” signed under the guttered pans. Blackmore lists Thomas Broomhead as “Gunmaker & Factor, Birmingham, 1804-20. Marked guns ‘London.’” The furniture has floral engraving. The stocks have checkered butts. CONDITION: Very good with mostly silver-gray on the lock and bayonet, most of the refinished brown remaining on the barrel, traces of blue finish on the furniture which is mostly cleaned silver gray, and minor overall wear including some pitting at the vent. Aside from a split in the ramrod channel, the stock is very good and has crisp checkering and some mild dings and scratches. Mechanically fine. B) Broomhead Flintlock Pistol - NSN, 65 cal., 9 3/8 inch octagon bbl., brown/bright/blue finish, walnut stock. See “A.” CONDITION: Very good with mostly silver-gray on the lock and bayonet, most of the refinished brown on the barrel, blue finish on the protected areas of the furniture which otherwise is mostly cleaned to silver gray, and minor overall wear. The stock is very good and has crisp checkering and some light dings and scratches. Mechanically fine. Estimate: 4,500 - 6,000
