Exceptional and Well-Documented Factory Engraved Colt No. 1
Derringer as Pictured in “The Book of Colt Engraving” by Wilson - Serial no.
977, 41 RF cal., 2 1/2 inch irregular bbl., nickel finish, metal grips. Colt’s First Model Derringer was based on the design first manufactured by
Moore Patent Firearms Co. and then the National Arms Co. before it was purchased by Colt
in 1870. They were manufactured until 1890. Colt advertised this model as the “No. 1 National Deringer.” This example has flourishes of scroll engraving on the sides of the nickeled frame and behind the hammer and a small burst pattern at the breech. The markings
and other features are standard. This pistol is pictured on p. 216 of “The Book of Colt Engraving” by Wilson. CONDITION: Excellent, retains 98% plus of the original nickel finish with some scattered light pinprick type flaking, crisp engraving, and crisp checkering on the grip.
Mechanically excellent.

Very Scarce Early Production Two-Digit Serial Number 15 Factory Engraved Colt No. 2 Derringer - Serial no. 15, 41 RF cal., 2 1/2 inch irregular bbl., nickel finish, walnut grips. One of approximately 9,000 manufactured from 1870 to 1890, with this being an early production, two-digit serial number example. It has the standard two-line address and “2” model marking on the top barrel flat flanked by Maltese crosses. There are flourishes of factory floral scroll engraving on the sides
of the frame and the back strap. The matching two-digit serial number is marked on the butt and on the bottom of the barrel. It is fitted with blade and hammer notch sights and a pair of checkered walnut grips that have the mat
CONDITION: Exceptionally fine, retains 95% of the original nickel finish with s
wear on the left of the frame and showing a grey patina and some light
flaking/pitting at the muzzle. The grips are very fine with some mild wear of the varnish and mostly crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent. Provenance: The George S. Lewis Jr. Collection.
