Rare Early Production Three Digit
Solid Frame Winchester Model
1890 Slide Action .22 Short Rifle with Factory Letter -
Serial no. 804, 22 short cal., 24 inch octagon bbl., blue/casehardened
finish, walnut stock. Manufactured in 1891. The accompanying factory
letter lists this rifle as chambered in .22 Short when received in the warehouse
on February 23, 1891, and shipped the next day and returned and repaired on March 1, 1895, June 28, 1904, and September 11, 1909 (the rifle retains all 1891 production features, so work probably was performed on the mechanism).
Dovetail blade front and notch rear sights on a barrel with the two-line address ahead of the rear sight and “22 SHORT” at the breech. The upper tang has the three-line model/patent dates marking. The three digit serial number is marked on the lower tang. Solid frame, 12-groove round forearm and smooth
straight grip stock with crescent buttplate. The barrel, magazine tube and bolt are blue, and the remaining surfaces are casehardened.
CONDITION: Fine. The barrel, magazine tube and bolt retain 40% faded original blue finish thinning to a brown. The hammer, frame and trigger guard retain 50% original case colors, and the buttplate has a mixed gray patina. The wood is very fine with minor dings and scratches. Mechanically excellent. This is one of the finest early production three digit Winchester Model 1890s RIAC has had the pleasure of selling!

Excellent Winchester Model 1890 Slide Action Rifle in Desirable .22 WRF - Serial no. 383124A, 22 WRF cal., 24 inch octagon bbl., blue
finish, walnut stock. Manufactured in 1909. Beaded blade front and special order Winchester 32A adjustable semi-buckhorn rear sights, fifth
style barrel inscription, Winchester “WP” proofs on the barrel and receiver at the breech, Third Model receiver with exposed locking lugs, “W.R.F.”
marking on front of receiver, flip up peep sight on the upper tang, and matching numbers on the lower tang and receiver. 12 groove slide handle and plain straight grip stock with blue steel crescent buttplate.
CONDITION: Excellent with 97% bright original blue finish, well-defined
markings, crisp proofs, mild handling and cycling marks, and a slightly
thinning brown patina on the magazine tube. The wood is very fine with some
small dings and some edge wear. Mechanically excellent.
