Fine Antique Colt Black Powder Frame Frontier
Six Shooter Single Action Army Revolver - Serial
no. 150781, 44-40 WCF cal., 7 1/2 inch round bbl.,
nickel finish, hard rubber grips. When introduced in 1877, the
.44-40 W.C.F. Single Action Army, or Frontier Six Shooter, was
intended to be used in conjunction with another legendary
western icon, the Winchester Model 1873 rifle, which came standard in the same
chambering. “The .44-40 WCF was added to the list of Colt calibers for use with the
popular Winchester rifle of the same caliber,” wrote Colt author David Brown. “This
combination of a rifle and a six shooter using the same cartridge made it possible
for their user to buy only one kind of ammunition, and he could carry ‘fodder’ for both guns in
the same cartridge belt.” Manufactured in 1893, it has the standard one-line address on top of the barrel and the Frontier Six Shooter marking on the left. The left of the frame has the two-line patent dates followed by the circled Rampant Colt. The matching full serial number is on the bottom of the frame, trigger guard, and back strap, and the matching partial serial number, “0781”, is hand marked inside each grip panel. The assembly number “274” is marked inside the loading gate. It is fitted with a blade front sight, groove rear sight, and a pair of checkered hard rubber grips with Rampant Colts at the tops.
CONDITION: Fine, retains 75% of the original nickel finish with some scattered large corrosion patches on the cylinder, barrel, ejector housing, and hammer, showing a mixture of smooth dark grey patina and rough dark brown oxidation. The grips are fine showing an attractively faded/aged chocolate tone, some scattered light handling marks, and mostly crisp checkering. The action is slightly stiff, possibly due to grease buildup, otherwise mechanically fine.
Estimate: 4,500 - 6,500
