Desirable Factory Dog Panel Scene Engraved Marlin Deluxe
Model 1897 Lever Action Rifle - Serial no. 288884, 22 LR cal.,
24 inch part octagon bbl., blue/casehardened finish, walnut stock. Manufactured in 1904 and
featuring a seldom encountered
factory engraving. The receiver
is decorated with a Marlin No.
1 engraving pattern consisting
of scrollwork, zig-zag line borders, and a circular vignette on the left side. The vignette depicts a setter in an open field scene. Dog engravings on
Marlin rifles are very rare, and knowledgeable collectors estimate only 22 rifles feature this type of dog engraving. Dog engravings were generally reserved for shotguns. Marlin’s engraving patterns were created by renowned master
engraver Conrad Ulrich, and in 1897 the No. 1 pattern cost an additional $5.00. The half octagon barrel is fitted with a
German silver blade front sight and Lyman folding two leaf rear sight and is marked with the two-line legend on the top flat ahead
of the rear sight. The barrel and receiver are British proofed. The rifle has a Marble folding tang peep sight and a 2/3 magazine tube. The top of the receiver is factory drilled and tapped for sight mounting. The underside of the receiver has the serial number above scrollwork. The nicely figured walnut forearm and pistol grip stock feature factory No. A checkering. The pistol grip cap and shotgun type buttplate are hard rubber.
CONDITION: Very fine, retaining 65% original blue finish with thinning to brown on the balance and a small patch of pitting on the barrel. The receiver retains 70% vivid refinished case colors and a crisp engraving. The refinished wood is fine with a slight chip at the upper tang, few minor handling marks and overall crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent.
Provenance: The Tom Selleck Collection.
