Exceptional Raised Relief Carved Contemporary Flintlock American Long Rifle by William Buchele, Author of “Recreating the American Longrifle” - NSN, 45 cal., 42 inch octagon bbl., brown finish, curly
maple stock. This rifle is accompanied by original letters from William Buchele about the ordering of the two rifles and a tomahawk in this sale (LOT 1024) by a Mr. Smith back in the late 1960s. Buchele was one of the most pivotal 20th century gunmakers when it comes to the heritage of the American longrifle. In addition to his own rifles which varied widely in their array of ornamentation, he wrote “Recreating the American Longrifle” which has served as a guide for generations of subsequent builders and has helped keep the crafting of traditional American muzzleloaders alive. The rifle has traditional blade and notch sights, “W Buchele” signed on the top flat with some decorative engraved accents, “Buchele” signed on the lock, brass furniture with nice traditional engraving, inlaid nickel-silver accents with engraving, and highly figured curly maple stock with raised relief carving, including gadroon patterns ahead of the stock flats, drop flats, scrolls, and a crosshatched plateau under the cheekpiece which has a patriotic eagle inlay. CONDITION: Extremely fine with 95% plus original finish, light aged patina, shoed frizzen, some small insect marks, and minor handling and storage marks. The trigger sometimes needs to be reset manually, but otherwise the rifle is mechanically excellent.

The rifle has traditional blade and notch sights, “W Buchele” signed on the top flat with some decorative engraved accents, unmarked lock, brass furniture with nice engraving, a horse and “LIBERTY OR DEATH” inscribed on the pierced side plate, inlaid nickel-silver accents with engraving, including an elaborate patriotic eagle motif with wire inlaid accents on the cheekpiece, and a highly figured curly maple stock with raised relief carving, floral patterns at the breech and wrist, and a raised relief carved Native American with brass head tomahawk, nickel-silver band in his hair, and a checkered background on the left side. CONDITION: Extremely fine overall with 98% original brown finish, and only light age and storage related wear along with some scrapes on the frizzen from test firing. Mechanically excellent. This is a beautiful example of 1960s American longrifle craftsmanship from one of the periods most talented artisans. Estimate: 4,500 - 7,000
LOT 3144 Shiloh-Sharps Model 1874 Single Shot Falling Block Rifle - Serial no. 5278B, 45-70 Government cal., 30 inch octagon bbl., blue/ casehardened finish, walnut stock. This is a reproduction of the Sharps Model 1874 single shot rifle manufactured by the Shiloh Rifle Co. in Big Timber, Montana. The top of the barrel is marked “Shiloh-Sharps Model 1874” and “CALIBRE 45/2 1/10” at the breech. The left side of the receiver is marked “SHILOH RIFLE MFG. CO./BIG TIMBER, MONTANA”. Globe style front with bubble level, buckhorn with an adjustable ladder rear sight with a tang mounted mid-range peep sight adjustable for elevation. Blue barrel with casehardened receiver, lever and hammer. Adjustable double set triggers and fitted with extra upgraded walnut fancy forearm with polished pewter end cap and straight grip stock with a cheekpiece and checkered casehardened buttplate. CONDITION: Excellent overall, 99% original blue and casehardened finishes with only slight handling marks. Mechanically excellent. Estimate: 3,000 - 4,000

Excellent Left-Hand Configuration Shiloh-Sharps Model 1874 Single Shot Falling Block Rifle with Box - Serial no. 9662, 45-70 Government cal., 29 3/4 inch octagon bbl., blue/casehardened finish, walnut stock. Manufactured in Big Timber, Montana. The barrel is fitted with globe spirit gauge front sight and buckhorn folding ladder rear sight with “Shiloh-Sharps Model 1874” ahead of the rear sight and “CALIBRE 45/2 1/10” behind it. The casehardened receiver bears the Shiloh address on the left side and is fitted with double set triggers, and adjustable folding ladder peep sight fitted on the top tang. Mounted in a well-figured walnut forend and pistol grip stock with left-hand configured shadowline cheekpiece and checkered plastic buttplate. Includes original shipping box and ten extra front sight inserts. CONDITION: Excellent overall, retaining 99% original blue and casehardened finishes with minimal handling evidence. Mechanically excellent. Estimate: 1,800 - 3,000
