Engraved A. H. Fox 16 Gauge DE Grade Double Barrel Shotgun - Serial
no. 300624, 16 gauge, 26 inch solid rib bbl., blue/casehardened finish, walnut stock.
Manufactured in 1915 and later refurbished by Connecticut Shotgun Manufacturing Co. with recut markings and engraving. Built with
blued steel barrels with a single nickel
bead sight on the matted concave solid
rib, “CHROMOX FLUID COMPRESS STEEL”
and “MADE BY A. H. FOX Co. PHILA. PA.
U.S.A.” marked on the right and left
tubes respectively, 2 3/4 inch wedges of floral scroll engraving at either breech, and chambers with automatic ejectors. The barrels are mated to a fine casehardened boxlock
action which displays the beautiful DE Grade engraving consisting of floral scrollwork surrounding “ANSLEY H. FOX” banners on either side as well as three separate game scenes, the left scene with a pair of geese in flight, the underside showing a setter on point, and the right with a pair of grouse in
flight. The gun features a Fox-Kautely single selective trigger and tang mounted automatic safety. The gun is fitted with a beautifully figured
and fancy checkered forend with ebony tip inlay and engraved fittings as well as a straight grip stock with checkered flats and a hard rubber buttplate. Barrel and
stock measurements (R/L): bore diameter nine inches from the breech .663/.663 inches; choke constriction .005/.018 inches; minimum wall thickness .043/.044 inches; 1 3/4 inch drop at comb; 2 5/8 inch drop at heel; 13 13/16 inch length of pull; weight 6 lbs. 5 oz.
CONDITION: Very fine as refurbished, retaining 99% blue and casehardened finishes with minor handling evidence, some pock marking in the wood on the forend, and sharp recut checkering on the wood. Mechanically excellent.

Factory Game Scene Engraved A. H. Fox XE Grade
Double Barrel Shotgun with J. T. Callahan Letter - Serial
no. 24660, 12 gauge, 30 inch solid rib bbl., blue/casehardened
finish, walnut stock. Built with blued steel barrels featuring
dual bead sights (front bead absent) on the matted concave
solid rib, “CHROMOX FLUID COMPRESSED STEEL” and “MADE
BY A. H. FOX GUN Co. PHILA. PA. U.S.A.” on the right and left respectively, 1 3/4 inch
wedges of leafy scroll engraving at either breech, and chambers measured 2 3/4
inches with automatic ejectors. The barrels are fitted to a casehardened boxlock
action which displays highly attractive XE Grade pattern engraving consisting
of near full coverage leafy scroll engraving surrounding three oval panel game
scenes. The scenes depict a pair of mallard in flight on the left, a pair of grouse in flight on the right, and
a dog on alert on the underside. The gun features double triggers and a tang mounted automatic safety.
The gun is mounted with a beautifully figured and multi-point checkered splinter forend with engraved
fittings and a pistol grip stock with a hard rubber factory grip cap and a replacement red rubber recoil
pad. Included is a reproduction hang tag and a letter from J. T. Callahan confirming the current grade,
gauge, barrel length, chokes, pistol grip stock, and triggers when it was shipped on May 5, 1922, to
Abercrombie & Fitch of New York City. Also included is an oak & leather takedown case containing snap caps, nickel oiler, and
cleaning tools. Barrel and stock measurements (R/L): bore diameter nine inches from the breech .732/.733 inches; choke constriction .037/.037 inches; minimum wall thickness .035/.040 inches; 1 9/16 inch drop at comb; 2 3/8 inch drop at heel; 14 7/16 inch length of pull; weight 7 lbs. 8 oz.
CONDITION: Very fine, retaining 98% reapplied blue finish on the barrels, 50% original case colors on the action, grey patina on the triggerguard, and light handling evidence. The re-oiled wood is very good with numerous small scratches, a stress line off the upper tang, and crisp checkering. Case is very fine. Mechanically excellent.
