The barrels are paired with a beautifully casehardened sidelock action which displays extensive floral scroll engraving surrounding a mix of bright polished and nitre blued pins and screws. The scrollwork also envelopes a gold inlaid “J. Rigby & Co.” signature on either lockplate as well as “CAL - 416/RIGBY” in gold on the underside of the action and the serial number in gold on the lower tang. The rifle is signed on the triggerplate to the right of the trigger “A. L. Hunt” for English Master Engraver Alison Hunt, an incredibly skilled engraver in her own right in addition to being the daughter of legendary Master Engraver Ken Hunt. The rifle features bushed firing pins, nitre blue cocking indicators on either lockplate, dual triggers, and a tang mounted manual safety with gold inlaid “SAFE” marking. The rifle is fitted with a lovely highly figured and multi-point checkered beavertail forend with engraved casehardened fittings and a pistol grip stock with teardrop carved drop points, black grip cap, shadowline cheekpiece, blank gold inscription oval, rear sling swivel, and Decelerator recoil pad. Included is a factory oak & leather takedown case with a pair of nickel snap caps, a nickel oiler, two turnscrews, and a cleaning spout. Length of pull 14 3/16 inches. Weight 9 lbs. 10 oz.
CONDITION: Excellent overall, retaining 98% plus original blue, casehardened, and gold finishes with minor handling evidence, a scratch across the barrels on the underside near muzzle, and sharp checkering on the stock and forend. The case is very fine. Mechanically excellent. A great chance to own a rifle from one of London’s best makers!
