Special Order Panel Scene Factory Engraved Casehardened Winchester Deluxe Model 1886 Lever Action Rifle with Factory Letter - Serial no. 91229, 45/70 cal., 24 3/8 inch part octagon bbl., blue/casehardened finish, deluxe walnut stock. The factory letter indicates this rifle had its serial number applied on August 30, 1894, and was received in the warehouse on September 28, 1894, and shipped the same day in order 20938. It lists the rifle in .45/70 caliber with a 1/2 octagon barrel 24 inches in length, plain trigger, and a checkered pistol grip stock. There is no mention of the engraving; most likely a factory recording error. The barrel has a beaded blade front sight, the two- line address, three-leaf rear sight with inlaid sight lines, and “45-70” at the breech. A half-magazine is fitted underneath. The casehardened forend cap, frame, and buttplate feature factory engraving consisting mainly of tight scrolls and a variety of border designs along with a pair of deer in a wooded scene on the left side. The engraving style is very similar to the rifle on page 159 of “The Book of Winchester Engraving” by R.L. Wilson which is noted as signed “J. ULRICH.” The upper tang has the model designation, and the lower tang has the patent marking and serial number on the bottom and
“192 XX” on the left side under the stock. “192” is repeated in the upper tang mortise. The deluxe pistol grip stock and forearm have style H checkering, and the grip has a contrasting inlay.
