Excellent Antique Winchester Model 1894 Lever Action Rifle in Highly Desirable .38-55 W.C.F. - Serial no. 17862, 38-55 WCF cal., 26 inch octagon bbl., blue finish, walnut stock.
Manufactured in 1896, this is an outstanding example of an early production Winchester Model 1894 rifle in standard configuration, as well as chambered in the desirable .38-55 W.C.F. These standard configuration rifles were
often viewed as utilitarian tools during their working lives, and thus, few examples in high condition like this one remain. The standard two-line address is marked on the top flat of the barrel along with the caliber marking at the breech. The three-line
model, trademark, and patent date is on the upper tang, and the serial number is marked on the bottom of the receiver. It is fitted with
a German silver blade front sight and an elevation adjustable buckhorn/sporting rear sight. It is mounted with a smooth forearm and straight grip stock,
showing some attractive contrasting straight grain, and is fitted with a crescent buttplate. CONDITION: Excellent, retains 90% plus of the original blue finish, 80% of the vibrant case colors on the hammer and lever, and 80% of the bright original nitre blue remaining
on the loading gate with some thinning to brown on the left side of the magazine tube and scattered light handling marks. The wood is very fine with some scattered light handling marks. Mechanically excellent.
Documented Special Order Winchester Deluxe Model 1892 Lever Action Rifle with Factory Letter - Serial no. 157231, 25-20 WCF cal., 24 inch part octagon bbl., blue finish, walnut stock. Manufactured in 1897 according to Madis. This is a desirable, documented example of a special order Winchester deluxe Model 1892 rifle. The Winchester Model 1892 was often viewed as a working gun, meaning that relatively few were ordered with extra bells and whistles, let alone the plethora of special order features seen on this example. The included factory letter lists the rifle in .25-20 W.C.F., half octagon barrel, half magazine, plain trigger, takedown, Lyman front, leaf, and rear tang sights, and a checkered pistol grip stock with a rubber shotgun buttplate when received at the warehouse on 3 September 1903 and shipped the same day in order number 198078. The top barrel flat is marked with the standard two-line address and caliber marking at the breech. The three line model, trademark, and patents date information is marked on the upper tang, and the serial number is on the bottom of the receiver. It is import marked on the inside edge of the ejection port. The left side of the lower tang has a peened out assembly number followed by “XXX S”, which is indicative of a factory order being changed before the rifle shipped and may explain the extended time between the application of the serial number on 5 February 1901 and arriving at the warehouse on 3 September 1903. The left side of the upper tang is marked “c 14537 XX R”, with “14537 92” marked in the stock inlet. “KY 402/22-6752” is lightly hand-scribed on the lower tang. It is fitted with a Lyman beaded blade front sight, Lyman two-leaf rear sight, and a Lyman peep sight on the upper tang, all special order. It is mounted with a very finely figured, H-pattern checkered forearm and pistol grip stock with a hard rubber grip cap and checkered, hard rubber buttplate. CONDITION: Fine, retains 60% plus of the original blue finish and strong traces of the original case colors on the sides of the lever and hammer with the balance having thinned to mostly a smooth brown patina. The wood is also fine with some scattered minor handling marks and mostly crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent. Do not miss your opportunity at this special feature loaded, deluxe Model 1892 rifle! Estimate: 8,500 - 14,000
