Unusual Cased Pair of Engraved and Silver Mounted Percussion Dueling Pistols with Two Additional Barrels for Each Pistol
-A) Percussion Pistol - NSN, 40 cal., 9 1/2 inch octagon bbl., brown/ blue/casehardened/silver finish, walnut stock. These interesting pistol set was originally produced as a pair of flintlock pistols and were updated
to percussion ignition and are accompanied by three Damascus barrels
for each pistol: 9 1/2 inch .40 caliber, 9 3/8 inch .40 caliber, and 6 1/2
inch approximately .47 caliber. The barrels are all rifled and have scroll engraving, dovetailed silver blade front sights, Birmingham proofs, “1”
and “2” on the barrels for the respective pistols, and casehardened breech plugs with platinum bands and plugs. The shorter barrels are also inscribed
200 “London” on top. The standing breech has foliate engraving and integral
notch rear sights. The locks are marked “Manton” at the center and have foliate engraving and sliding safeties. The trigger guards are blued steel and feature scroll engraving with small masks and enclose adjustable single set triggers. The forend caps, wedge escutcheons, and wrist escutcheons and smooth silver. The pommel caps are silver lion masks with Birmingham hallmarks (including “A” date codes for 1824) and “F&J” silversmith marks. The half-stocks have panels of checkering on the wrists. The pair comes in a wood case with a reproduction Joseph Manton trade label, blued 38 bore (.497 caliber) and 48 bore (.459 caliber) ball molds, loading and cleaning rods, a mallet, a Hawksley powder flask,
and nipple wrench.
CONDITION: Very fine with most of the period refurbished finish remaining, aged patina on the silver, crisp checkering on the stock, and generally
light handling and storage type marks. Mechanically fine. The case and accessories are mostly fine with some age and storage related wear overall and cracks and stains on the lid, and the mallet head is fair
with cracks and chips.
B) Percussion Pistol - NSN, 40 cal., 9 1/2 inch octagon bbl., brown/blue/ casehardened/silver finish, walnut stock.
CONDITION: Very fine with most of the period refurbished finish remaining, some fading mainly on the lock and the short barrel, aged patina on
the silver, crisp checkering on the stock, and generally only some faint handling and storage type marks. Mechanically fine.
