Magnificent Patriotic Themed Russel J. Smith Signed Factory Master Engraved
Smith & Wesson Model 53 Double Action Revolver with Case and Extra Cylinder -
Serial no. 6K1, 22 magnum jet cal., 8 1/2 inch solid rib bbl., nickel finish, goncalo alves grips. Russel J. Smith made a name for
himself as the master engraver for Smith & Wesson which lead him to engrave revolvers for a multitude of famous persons.
Rock Island Auction had the great pleasure of selling the revolver inlaid and engraved for the King of Rock and Roll himself,
Elvis Presley, in our August of 2023 auction for $199,750. This revolver, much like that made for Elvis, features a patriotic
theme for the American Bicentennial and includes several motifs used on Elvis’s iconic Model 53. Russel J. Smith truly turned
this magnificent steel canvas into a work of firearms art. The engraving for this revolver consists mostly of magnificently
executed deep floral scroll engraving. Both sides of the barrel near the muzzle display a motif of an eagle clutching a ribbon reading
“1776” and “1976” on the left and right respectively. Between the cylinder flutes, a star is engraved among the floral scroll. The sideplate
engraving depicts a trio of Revolutionary War musicians (two drummers and one flautist) with a banner to the right of the scene reading “1776*1976”. Above the rear grip serrations is the Liberty Bell on a punchdot background. The work is signed “BY R. J. SMITH” under the
right panel. Includes a hardwood case with red velvet interior and a matching engraved extra .22 Magnum cylinder. Also included is prints of
the engraving patterns for the Elvis Model 53 with notes stating that several motifs (the Liberty Bell at the top of the back strap) were used on
Elvis’s iconic Model 53 after S&W asked the original owner of this revolver. This revolver commemorates the opening of the bicentennial. As the 250th anniversary of the founding of the U.S. approaches, this centennial themed S&W would make for a fitting addition to any Americana collection. This revolver is consecutively numbered to the previous lot, another magnificent piece of Russel J. Smith’s magnificent firearms art!
