Exceptional Russian Contract Winchester Model 1895 Lever Action Musket - Serial no. 350423, 7.62 mm Russian cal., 28 inch round bbl., blue finish, walnut stock. This is one of the approximately 294,000 Model 1895 Muskets sold to the Imperial Russian Government between 1915 and 1916. These muskets were similar to the standard musket, but with a stripper clip guide mounted on top of the receiver, chambered for the 7.62 Russian Nagant cartridge, and bayonet lug. This example was manufactured in 1916. The top of the chamber has the Winchester factory proof over “7.62/M.M.”, upper tang has the three-line model/ trademark information, and the left side of the receiver has the two-line address/patent marking.
The right side of the receiver and buttstock are marked with a Russian inspection stamp. Pinned blade front sight, ladder rear sight graduated to 3,200 meters, full length finger groove forearm, upper handguard and carbine
buttplate with compartment (bore brush not included). The buttstock is fitted with a quick release sling swivel. These Russian contract muskets are generally encountered in rough shape with this example being in well above average condition.
CONDITION: Very fine, retaining 70% plus original blue finish with smooth brown patina on the balance. The Russian inspector markings are
clear. The wood is also very fine with a stress line at the upper tang, a few minor compression marks and some minor handling marks. Mechanically
excellent. A truly exceptional Russian contract Winchester Model 1895 Musket. Estimate: 5,000 - 7,500
on the frame behind the trigger, an Arabic inscription on the left side plate and another on the buttplate, musket forearm and buttstock with an unclear cartouche on the left near
the heel, and a modern russet leather sling. The side plate’s inscription appears to translate to “A gift from the Saudi Arabian Army to Commander Roy Roberts. Tabuk.” The buttplate inscription’s meaning is unclear. This may related to U.S. Sergeant Roy Roberts who participated in Operation Desert Storm. There was also Lt. Colonel Roy Austin Roberts (1933-2021) who
served in the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1976 and is noted as having been stationed in Saudi Arabia. CONDITION: Very good with 20% original blue finish, strong original case colors on the hammer, smooth gray and brown patina on the balance of the iron, attractive age darkened patina on
the frame and buttplate, and general mild wear. The stock and forearm are fair and have heavier wear consisting mainly of extensive dents, gouges, and deep scrapes. Mechanically excellent. Estimate: 3,000 - 5,000
