The Mexican-American War further proved the utility of revolvers in combat, and following the war Samuel Colt recognized the importance of the Texans in his business success. He memorialized the Texans’ earlier successes on the battlefield with his revolvers by using a scene of the Texas Rangers fighting the Comanche on the Walker and Dragoon revolvers and a scene from the Naval Battle of Campeche on his Model 1851 Navy, 1860 Army, and 1861 Navy revolvers.
With only around 1,000 manufactured (same number as the U.S. contract Walkers), No. 5 Patersons in any condition are rarely encountered. These revolvers often saw hard use on the frontier and examples with any remaining finish are nearly unheard of. With its Texas, Mexican-American War, and Colt history, this model transcends collector genres, and a “Texas Paterson” is highly sought after by antique arms collectors. The revolver has the distinctive flared walnut grip, an Ehlers loading lever and the rounded back 5-shot cylinder featuring the stagecoach scene.
The top barrel flat is marked “- Patent Arms No.. Co. Paterson, N.J. Colt’s Pt.” reading from the breech to the muzzle with the “snake and star” marking on each end. The matching serial number “818” is stamped
on the butt, barrel lug below the cylinder pin hole, cylinder (rear) and wedge. The Texas Model Paterson is the most desirable of all the rare and highly collectable Colt Paterson revolvers. This revolver is pictured on page 147 of “The Paterson Colt Book” by R.L. Wilson.
CONDITION: Very good. The barrel retains 25% original blue finish and the frame retains traces of original case colors, otherwise a smooth
gray patina mixed with some minor pitting. Most of the cylinder scene remains. The professionally restored grip is good with a few minor dings and high edge wear. Mechanically excellent. The No. 5 Paterson revolver is the icon of all Colts and is a must have for the serious collector. Estimate: 80,000 - 120,000
