Manufactured in 1898. Model 1896 saddle ring carbines were used throughout the Spanish-American War and later in the Philippine Insurrection, most famously by future President Theodore Roosevelt’s 1st Volunteer Cavalry “Rough Riders”. Features fixed blade front sight, 2,000 yard ladder rear sight correctly marked with a “C”, an extended barrel band to protect the rear sight from bumping into the saddle boot, and a short saddle ring on the left side. The receiver is marked “MODEL 1896.” ahead of “U.S./SPRINGFIELD ARMORY. 69562” on the left side (appropriate for an
early “Model 1896” Carbine). Fitted with a smooth walnut straight grip carbine stock with boxed script “JSA/1897” (J. Sumnar Adams) cartouche stamped on the left of the wrist, “G.B” above a circled script “P” proof stamp behind the trigger guard, and a flat buttplate with a trapdoor compartment containing a three-piece cleaning rod and oiler. CONDITION: Fine, retaining 75% plus original blue and 50% plus casehardened finishes with light edge wear, minor spotting/pitting, minor freckling, thinning on the barrel, and crisp receiver markings. Stock is very fine with minor handling evidence and well defined grasping grooves and stampings. Mechanically excellent. Estimate: 3,000 - 4,500
LOT 1166 Exceptional 1902 Dated U.S. Springfield Armory Model 1898 Krag-Jorgensen Bolt Action Rifle - Serial no. 392369, 30-40 Krag cal., 30 inch round bbl., blue/casehardened finish, walnut stock. These rifles were the standard service rifle from 1892 when they replaced the single shot trapdoors until 1903 when they were replaced by the famous Springfield Model 1903 rifles. However, they remained in use into WWI by reserve and support units. This example has a crisp “JSA/1902” inspector’s cartouche and standard markings and features. CONDITION: Excellent overall with 98% plus original blue and dark oil quenched casehardened finish. The niter blue on the bolt remains particularly vibrant. There is some
bayonet mounting wear at the muzzle and some light patina forming on the bolt handle. The exceptional stock has a rich oil finish and only some slight handling and storage type marks and dings. The markings throughout including the cartouches are crisp. Mechanically excellent. This is certainly a superior Model 1898 Krag and would be a very attractive
addition to a U.S. martial arms collection. Estimate: 2,750 - 4,250
