New Model 1863 percussion carbine, and according to our consignor it was discovered completely covered in arsenal cosmoline. Ordnance sub-inspection marks are located on the following: rear of lockplate, top of hammer, left side of frame, left barrel flat, saddle ring bar flat, left side of barrel band, rear of trigger plate, bottom center of lever, lever retaining catch, and top heel of buttplate. In addition, the buttstock has an “NSP” sub-inspection stamp near the top buttplate heel along with “AWM” and “TWR” cartouches above and below the saddle ring bar. The forend has a “TWR” sub-inspection stamp on the bottom flat. Original Sharps New Model percussion carbines in this condition are extremely rare, and Rock Island Auction Co. is extremely proud to offer this example, one of the finest we have cataloged. CONDITION: Excellent plus as issued. The barrel retains 98% plus original deep, vivid blue finish with only a couple miniscule blemishes. Original case colors on the lockplate, hammer, and frame remain at 95% plus, with the lever, trigger bar, barrel band, and buttplate retaining somewhat less. All of the markings are razor sharp, and the percussion nipple appears as issued. The screw heads are excellent, retaining most of their original nitre blue finish. The buttstock retains all of its original oil finish, having wonderful raised grain throughout and sharp cartouches. There are some minor handling marks on the buttstock with a few more pronounced dings on the left side of the forend. The saddle ring bar retains its original arsenal bright finish. Mechanically excellent. This is a highly desirable example of one of the most sought after Civil War carbines. It would be extremely difficult to improve upon the condition of this Sharps New Model 1863 percussion carbine. It would be a prized addition to any U.S. martial collection! Provenance: The David Aroh Collection. Estimate: 18,000 - 27,500
