LOT 1234
Very Scarce Small Bore Breechloading Flintlock Rifle Based on the Chaumette System - NSN, 32 cal., 40 3/4 inch part octagon bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. This long rifle utilizes a system similar to Isaac de la Chaumette’s early 18th century design which employs a screw
in breech plug connected to the trigger guard which was also later improved by Patrick Ferguson and Durs Egg. However, on this example, instead of a normal flash pan and vent arrangement, the pan is partially grooved into the breechblock and top of the barrel, and the flash is communicated through a small channel at the edge of the breechblock. Another example of this priming style with a different lock design by Brion c. 1730 is noted in “The Ferguson Rifle and Its Origins” by W. Keith Neal in the American Society of Arms Collectors Bulletin in 1974. He notes that the Brion design used prepared paper cartridges which were stored in a compartment in the stock. Our present example also has a stock compartment. The barrel has three-groove rifling and a blade front sight. The furniture is iron. The screw-heads have floral engraving, and the cock is nicely sculpted. Otherwise, the metal is mostly plain. The stock has fine checkering on the forend and wrist. CONDITION: Very good with silver-gray patina overall, some minor pitting mostly by the pan, and generally minor overall wear. The stock has a hairline crack at the upper tang/lock and is otherwise also fine and has crisp checkering, nice oiled finish, and light handling and storage wear. Mechanically fine. This is a very rare rifle. Chaumette and Ferguson pattern breechloading flintlocks are extremely scarce in general, and we have never seen one of this pattern before! Estimate: 4,500 - 7,000
LOT 1235 East India Company Cavalry Carbine Dated 1810 - NSN, 65 cal., 26 1/4 inch round bbl., brown finish, walnut stock. The lock plate has the rampant lion motif at the center, “1810” on the tail, a “crown/2” mark below the pan, and double line borders. The smoothbore barrel has a block front sight/bayonet lug, London proofs, and “crown/9” and another marking at the breech. A saddle ring bar and ring are fitted on the left side. The other furniture is brass. The stock has a “TB” marking on the left stock flat, “crown/10” and what appears to be “crown/1” just behind the trigger guard tang, “KER” on the bottom of the butt, and the East India Company’s heart cartouche on the right side of the butt. CONDITION: Fine with a mix of an older finished brown finish and brown patina on the barrel, gray patina and oil staining on the lock, aged patina on the furniture, and mild overall wear. The stock is very fine and has mild scratches and dings, a small crack on the left at the breech, and generally mild wear. Mechanically fine. Estimate: 2,000 - 3,500
LOT 1236 Flintlock Musket with Dublin Castle Brown Bess Lock - NSN, 75 cal., 45 1/4 inch round bbl., blue/brown finish, walnut stock. This 18th century musket features a smoothbore, two-stage, round barrel with a small blade front sight, girdles above the ramrod entry point followed by an unclear marking that appears to include “110”, and no visible proofs. The musket lock has the Georgian cipher at the center and “DUBLIN/CASTLE” marked on the rear. The side plate and trigger guard are also Brown Bess pattern. The wrist escutcheon, buttplate and two ramrod pipes are also brass but are non-martial pattern. The stock has an “apron” around the barrel tang and has a Brown Bess style butt. The tags with the gun attribute it as an American restocked musket. CONDITION: Fair with mix of dark patina and applied blue/brown, reworked vent, chipped refaced frizzen, moderate oxidation and pitting, modified pan, modern replacement top jaw and jaw screw, aged patina on the brass, dented and chipped buttplate with a split and gap at the heel, and moderate to heavy overall wear. The partially restored stock is fair with a spliced forend, chips and cracks, and repaired wrist. Mechanically fine. Estimate: 2,000 - 3,500
