Factory Engraved Holland & Holland No. Dominion C Grade Double Barrel Shotgun with Case - Serial no. 24531, 12 gauge, 28 inch solid rib bbl., blue/casehardened finish, walnut stock. Holland & Holland have been making some of the world’s finest guns for nearly 190 years and have always stood out as an example of what makes a true fine gun. Manufactured between 1903 and 1907 according to Donald Dallas on page 334 of his book “Holland & Holland ‘The Royal Gunmaker’”. Built with blued steel barrels featuring a single bead sight on the smooth sunken rib,
light engraving at the breech, import mark on the flats along with 1987 dated Birmingham reproof marks as well as the originals,
and 2 1/2 inch chambers with a single extractor. The barrels
are fitted to a casehardened No. 3 back action which displays extensive floral scroll engraving surrounding “H&H” banners on either lockplate before spilling onto the toplever,
triggerguard, and both tangs. The gun features gas checked firing pins, double triggers, and a tang mounted automatic safety with gold inlaid “SAFE” indicator. The gun is mounted with a beautifully figured and multi-point checkered forend with engraved shoe and a straight grip Monte Carlo stock with blank silver inscription oval and serrated horn buttplate. Includes the original wood and leather takedown case and some cleaning tools. Barrel and stock measurements (R/L): bore diameter nine inches from the breech both reproofed and measured at .728 inches; choke constriction .005/.011 inches; minimum wall thickness .031/.032 inches; 1 9/16 inch drop at comb; 2 11/16 inch drop at heel; 14 7/16 inch length of pull; weight 6 lbs. 5 oz. CONDITION: Very fine overall as professionally refurbished, retaining 97% blue finish with loss at the lower tang, 70% case colors, a few tiny dings and spots of freckling on the barrels, and crisp checkering on the stock and forend. Factory Engraved Pair of Charles Hellis & Sons Boxlock Double Barrel Shotguns with Case -A) Charles Hellis & Sons Shotgun - Serial no. 1913, 12 gauge, 29 inch solid rib bbl., blue/brush bright finish, walnut stock. Manufactured between 1900 and 1907 according to Nigel Brown’s “British Gunmakers Volume One: London”. The “A” gun has a replacement set of blued steel barrels featuring a single nickel bead sight on the smooth concave solid rib which is signed “CHARLES HELLIS & SONS Ltd. 119 EDGWARE ROAD. HYDE PARK. LONDON. W.” along with a flourish of floral scroll engraving and a gold “1”, Birmingham proof marks, import mark under the forend, and 2 1/2 inch chambers with automatic ejectors. The “B” gun
is of browned Damascus with the same rib marking (“2” instead of “1”), chambers, and import mark and retains its London proof marks. The barrels of each gun are fitted to brush bright boxlock actions with sideplates
displaying carved fences and bouquet and scroll engraving surrounding “CHARLES HELLIS & SONS” signed on either side and a gold “1” or “2” on the blued toplever. The guns feature double triggers and a tang mounted automatic safety with gold inlaid “SAFE” indicator. The guns are mounted with beautifully figured and multi-
point checkered splinter forends with engraved fittings and a gold “1” or “2” on the Anson button release
and straight grip stocks with teardrop carved drop points, a blank gold inscription oval, and a checkered bare butt. Included is an oak and leather takedown case with correct Hellis trade label on the interior lid, snap caps, and an oiler. Barrel and stock measurements (R/L): bore diameter nine inches from the breech both proofed “12” (.729 inches) and measured .733/.732 inches; choke constriction .006/.037 inches; minimum wall thickness .027/.028 inches; 1 1/2 inch drop at comb; 1 3/4 inch drop at heel; 15 3/8 inch length of pull; cast-off; weight 6 lbs. 11 oz. CONDITION: Fine as professionally refurbished, retaining 98% blue finish, some dried grease on the action and sideplates, and light handling evidence. The wood has a few minor handling marks and crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent. The case is good with some storage/transit wear. B) Charles Hellis & Sons Shotgun - Serial no. 1914, 12 gauge, 29 inch solid rib bbl., brown/blue/brush bright finish, walnut stock. As described in “A” with an approximately 1 inch wood extension to the checkered bare butt. Barrel and stock measurements (R/L): bore diameter nine inches from the breech both proofed “12” (.729 inches) and measured .731/.734 inches; choke constriction .010/.021 inches; minimum wall thickness .021/.019 inches; 1 9/16 inch drop at comb; 1 3/4 inch drop at heel; 15 5/16 inch length of pull; cast-off; weight 6 lbs. 8 oz. CONDITION: Very good as professionally refinished, retaining 97% brown finish, 70% blue finish with the majority of the loss on the action plate, traces of case colors on the triggerplate, some dried grease on the action, softened rib marking, and light handling evidence. The wood has a few scratches and well-defined checkering. Mechanically excellent. A great chance to own a pair of English doubles!
