CONDITION: Excellent overall with essentially all of the original brown finish, mostly bright furniture, dark aged patina on the silver, crisp engraving and carving, and generally only minor age and storage related wear overall, including some oxidation mainly on the trigger group. LOT 3206 Karl Kuehn Contemporary Flintlock Southern American Long Rifle - NSN, 40 cal., 44 1/8 inch octagon bbl., antiqued brown finish, curly maple stock. This rifle was purchased by the consignor from the maker in 1995 as discussed in the included letter from gunmaker Karl Kuehn. The rifle features traditional blade and notch sights, long tang that extends back to over the nose of the comb, “Karl Kuehn” signed on top of the barrel, “K Kuehn” signed on the lock, adjustable double set triggers, iron furniture, and a beautifully figured curly maple stock. CONDITION: Very fine overall with essentially all of the textured “antique” finish remaining throughout, distinct markings, beautiful figure, and minor handling and storage marks. Mechanically fine. LOT 3207 Freddie Harrison Engraved Contemporary Flintlock American Long Rifle - NSN, 45 cal., 43 3/4 inch octagon bbl., brown/brass finish, curly maple stock. This attractive 20th century rifle was originally built by Freddie L. Harrison of Bradford, Tennessee, and the stock was subsequently embellished by its current owner. It has “66 45” marked on the muzzle, dovetailed blade and notch sights, “F. L. Harrison” signed in script on top of the barrel, some light engraving at the breech and lock, adjustable double set triggers, and a
curly maple stock with incised and raised relief carving, wire inlaid accents, and engraved brass furniture, including a four-piece patchbox with pierced finial and side plates. CONDITION: Very fine with smooth brown finish, attractive aged patina on the brass, and crisp signature and engraving. Aside from a very faint crack between the entry pipe finial and trigger guard finial, the stock is also very fine and has crisp carving, attractive figure, and minor handling wear. Functions fine (set trigger first). Estimate: 1,200 - 1,800
LOT 3208 R.J. Lang Engraved and Carved Contemporary Flintlock Double Barrel Rifle - NSN, 40 cal., 43 1/2 inch octagon bbl., brown finish, maple stock. This rifle by R.J. Lang of Hays, Kansas, from c. 1976 features two rifled barrels with traditional blade and notch sights, “R.J. LANG” marked behind the rear sights, and “G.R. DOUGLAS 40 CAL” on the right barrel towards the breech. The locks are marked “1976/W.L. COCHRAN” on the inside and are fired using adjustable double set triggers. The furniture is nickel-silver with engraving. The maple stock has attractive molding and bold raised relief carving. The rifle is accompanied by provenance information indicating it was purchased in 1983 and subsequently tuned, engraved by Ron Smith, and refinished. CONDITION: Very fine as custom upgraded with 98% of the refinished brown remaining, aged patina on the furniture, and minor wear from age and storage. The stock is also excellent and has crisp carving and minimal light age and handling related wear. Mechanically fine. Provenance: The Max Dye Collection; Property of a Gentleman. Exceptional Engraved and Relief Carved Contemporary Nicholas Beyer Flintlock American Long Rifle by Louis Smith - NSN, 50 cal., 42 inch octagon bbl., brown finish, curly maple stock. This rifle was built by the late gunmaker Louis Smith (1927-2000) of Jonesboro, Tennessee, clearly with inspiration from Nicholas Beyer (see rifle No. 91 on page 235 of “Thoughts on the Kentucky Rifle in Its Golden Age” by Kindig). It features a tapered octagon barrel with dovetailed blade and notch sights, “Louis Smith” signed on top, and scroll engraving and an inlaid silver band at the breech; Siler lock with some light engraving, adjustable double set triggers, brass furniture, distinctive bird patchbox finial, toe plate with heart shaped piercing and floral finial, silver oval wrist escutcheon, man in the moon silver inlay on the cheekpiece, and beautifully figured curly maple stock with wire
