Exceptional Factory Engraved
Colt First Generation Single Action Army
Revolver with Relief Steer Head Carved Pearl Grips
and Factory Letter - Serial no. 245952, 45 LC cal., 4 3/4 inch round
bbl., nickel finish, pearl grips. Offered here is a highly sought after work of early
20th century Colt artistry: a factory engraved First Generation SAA. It has been estimated
that approximately 4,500 or .012% of the total First Generation Colt Single Action Army revolvers
manufactured were engraved. Not only does this SAA have a factory engraving, it also has
stunning relief carved steer head pearl grips which only add to its desirability among collectors.
The accompanying factory letter confirms the 4 3/4 inch barrel in .45 caliber, factory engraving
and nickel finish, while the type of stocks are “not listed.” The letter also confirms the revolver was
shipped to H&D Folsom Arms Co. of New York City on July 8, 1903. This shipment was for 6 guns.
The Colt factory engraving consists mostly of scrollwork on a punch dot background along with
zig-zag line and dot motifs on the ejector rod housing, cylinder, back strap, and trigger guard. Fan
patterns decorate the recoil shield and loading gate. The patterns are consistent with the work of the
famed Cuno Helfricht shop. Helfricht spent his nearly 50 year career exclusively with the Colt firm (1871-
1921). During his tenure with Colt, Helfricht saw the transition from percussion to cartridge firearms and a
rapidly growing market for engraved firearms. The top of the barrel features an engraved star burst followed by
the two-line Colt Hartford address legend. Line of dots flank the grooved rear sight on the top strap. The left side of the
frame carries the two-line patent dates marking followed by an encircled Rampant Colt. The revolver wears a set of pearl
grips with the right panel featuring a relief carved steer head.
CONDITION: Exceptionally fine, retaining 85% original nickel plating with a smooth gray patina on the balance. The
engraving is crisp. The grips are excellent with some surface chipping at the tops of both panels, crisp carving, and highly
attractive fiery colors. Mechanically excellent. A solid example of an early 20th century documented factory engraved Colt
SAA that will bring added dimension to any SAA or firearms art collection.
