Very Fine Antique Colt Acid Etched Panel Model 1877
Lightning Double Action Revolver with Pearl Grips and
Attractive Holster Rig - Serial no. 9249, 38 Long Colt cal., 6
inch round bbl., nickel finish, pearl grips. The Colt Model 1877
revolvers were Colt’s first double action revolvers and were
designed by William Mason who also helped design the Single
Action Army. Like the latter, these revolvers were popular
in the Old West. Along with its bullion embroidered holster
rig, it is not hard to imagine this Model 1877 having spent
time along the Texas-Mexico border. Manufactured in 1878,
the second year of production. The top of the barrel has the
standard two-line Hartford address and the left is marked with
“COLT D.A. 38” in an etched panel. The three-line patent dates
marking is on the left of the frame, and “38 CAL” is on the left of
the trigger guard. The matching serial number is visible on the
frame, trigger guard, and back strap, and the assembly number
“375” is inside the loading gate. It has standard features and is
fitted with a pair of period pearl grips. The high quality period
holster rig has silver bullion embroidered floral pattern on the
front of the holster and cartridge belt. The belt measures 40
inches in length and has 38 cartridge loops.
CONDITION: Very fine, retaining 85% untouched original nickel
plating with a smooth gray patina on the balance. The original
acid etched panel is excellent. The grips are also very fine with
limited chipping and handling marks. Mechanically excellent.
The holster rig is fine with most of the stitching remaining. An
antique Colt etched panel Model 1877 Lightning DA revolver
holster rig with a lot of Old West appeal.
Provenance: The Brig & Louise Pemberton Collection.
