The factory letter states the revolver was shipped to Albert Steinfeld Co. of
Tucson, Arizona, on October 22, 1926, with a 4 3/4 inch barrel in .45 caliber,
nickel finish, hard rubber stocks (currently wearing a set of highly attractive
period pearl grips) and level 1 factory engraving. This was a single gun
shipment. The documented factory “level 1” engraving is executed in the
transitional Wilbur Glahn style, showcasing broad scrollwork on fine punch dot
background with signature coverage on the cylinder and butt. The top of the
ejector rod housing displays a simple arrow engraved at the front and rear. The
revolver has standard Colt markings with matching serial numbers appearing
on the frame, trigger guard, and back strap.
CONDITION: Excellent, retaining 97% untouched original nickel finish showing
slight muzzle wear and light cylinder drag line and some loss at the front
of the cylinder stops. The engraving is crisp. The period replacement pearl
grips are fine with chips at the tops and attractive fiery colors. Mechanically
excellent. A well cared for factory engraved First Generation Colt Single Action
Army revolver linked to one of the most talented of the cowboy artists, Jack
van Ryder.
Provenance: Jack van Ryder; Property of a Gentleman.
Estimate: 18,000 - 27,500
