Engraved, Silver Inlaid, and Relief Carved Contemporary Simon
Lauck Flintlock American Long Rifle by Peter A. Alexander - NSN, 50 cal.,
44 1/4 inch octagon bbl., antiqued/brown finish, maple stock. This rifle was built by Peter A.
Alexander in 2012 as a faithful recreation of a rifle by Simon Lauck (1760-1815) of Winchester, Virginia.
Lauck and his brother Peter served with Daniel Morgan’s famous riflemen during the American Revolution.
Alexander is the author of “The Gunsmith of Grenville County: Building the American Longrifle” which includes
details on building a Lauck rifle. The tapered barrel has dovetailed blade and notch sights, “S • Lauck” signed in an elongated silver oval inlay on top, “Peter A. Alexander me fecit” inscribed on the upper right, “Anno
2012” in inversed text on the upper left, and a vent liner. The mounts are engraved brass and nickel silver. The stock featured detailed molding, incised carving, and relief carving as well as some wire inlaid accents.
CONDITION: Excellent overall with nearly all of the lightly textured brown finish on the barrel and lock, attractively antiqued finish on the mounts, crisp engraving and carving, and a few minor scratches and dings.
Mechanically excellent.

Early John Bonewitz “Bench Copy” Flintlock
American Long Rifle by Mark Wheland - NSN,
44 cal., 45 1/8 inch octagon bbl., antiqued blue/
brass finish, curly maple stock. This rifle was featured in “American Tradition: The Journal of the Contemporary Longrifle Association” in January
2010 as an example of a bench copy of an early John Bonewitz rifle by Mark Wheland of Pennsylvania who had the original on hand while creating
this beautiful rifle. That rifle is No. 78 in “Thoughts on the Kentucky Rifle in Its Golden Age” by Kindig. Wheland began building rifles in 1992 and
apprenticed under Allen Martin starting in 1999. He is an award winning gunmaker and recently served as the president of the Kentucky Rifle
Association. The original rifle dates to c. 1780. The rifle features a swamped octagonal barrel with traditional blade and notch sights and “M. Wheland” signed on top, antiqued finish on the barrel and metal, patinated brass mounts
with excellent floral and scroll engraving, and a curly maple stock with beautiful relief scroll carving.
CONDITION: Very fine with “antiqued” finish with some intentional light oxidation/pitting and generally only minor overall wear. Mechanically excellent.

Sevensburg Flintlock American Long
Rifle by Mark Wheland - NSN, 54 cal., 43 3/4 inch octagon bbl., antiqued finish, curly maple stock. This stunning contemporary early Virginia style American long rifle was built by Mark Wheland of Pennsylvania, an
award winning gunmaker and recently the president of the Kentucky Rifle Association. He began building in 1992 and apprenticed under Allen Martin starting in 1999. The rifle is based on a well-known example signed
“F. Klette -Sevensburg” from near Culpepper, Virginia. That rifle is featured in Shumway’s “Rifles of Colonial America” on p. 534 as rifle #123 and in figures 21a and 21b in the American Society of Arms Collectors article “Long
Rifles of the Valley of Virginia” by Edwin N. Gewirz. Wheland’s rifle features a tapered octagonal barrel with a dovetailed brass blade front sight, dovetailed notch rear sight, “SEVENSBURG” inscribed on top, and engraving on the
muzzle, breech, and tang. The engraved lock is signed “M/WHELAND”. The furniture is engraved brass, including an “Early Virginia” patchbox released via the rear screw at the heel. The curly maple stock has fine molding and
raised relief carving.
CONDITION: Very fine with “antiqued” finish with intentional mild oxidation/pitting and generally only minor overall wear. Mechanically excellent.

Engraved and Relief Carved Contemporary Virginia Flintlock American Long Rifle
by Michael McHugh - NSN, 50 cal., 44 inch octagon bbl., antiqued/brown finish, curly maple stock.
This rifle by current gunmaker Michael McHugh of Indiana is based on original rifles from Virginia and features
a swamped octagonal barrel with dovetailed blade and notch sights and “Michael McHugh” signed on top. The lock
features some light engraving. The silver and brass mounts feature extensive engraving, and the stock also featured fine
molding, and relief and incised carving as well as silver wire accents. The wrist escutcheon is inscribed “R.” The patchbox release is at the top of the hinge.
CONDITION: Excellent with essentially all of the original brown finish, attractive antiqued finish to the mounts, some minor oxidation, and generally only light handling and storage marks and scratches.
Mechanically excellent.
