Rare Book: “Ancient Arms and Armour Collected & Described
by Edwin J. Brett” with Inscription from the Author to His
Daughter in 1894 - This rare late 19th century leather-bound book
features a February 5, 1894, personal inscription from reading “To
Mrs Florence Brewer, From her fond Father in remembrance of her
loving mother whose dear help was an kindness given me on this
work of Ancient Arms and Armour. Edwin J. Brett Oakland St. Peters
Thanet and Burleigh House London W Febry 5th 1894”. Edwin John
Brett (1828-1895) was himself a publisher and editor. After the
death of his wife Eliza (1832-1893), he completed this work on his
impressive collection of arms and armor prior to selling the majority
of his collection on March 18, 1895. The cover features gilt arms
and armor and ornate script that reads “Ancient Arms and Armour
Collected & Described by Edwin J. Brett”, and the full title from the
title page is “A Pictorial and Descriptive Record of the Origin and
Development of Arms and Armour to Which are Appended 133
Plates Specially Drawn from the Author’s Collection at Oaklands,
St. Peter’s, Thanet, and Burleigh House, London”. The publisher is
Sampson Low, Marston & Company Limited of London in 1894. The
book measures 14 1/4 inches tall by 11 1/2 inches wide and 2 inches
deep and has gilt edges. This book was acquired by Norman R. Blank
from Bernard Quaritch Ltd. on June 30, 1964.
CONDITION: Very good with some mild shelf wear to the covers and
spine, minor wear to the pages, and distinct plates and text.

Antiquarian Book: “The
Gentleman’s Recreation in Two
Parts” by Richard Blome, 1686
- “The Gentleman’s Recreation in
Two Parts” by Richard Blome (d.
1705) was published in 1686 and
printed by R. Rotcroft in London.
This is one of the most impressive
17th century publications and
provides a fascinating insights
into the era as well as featuring
numerous full page illustrations.
There is a full page dedication
“To the most August James the
Second, By the Grace of GOD KING
of England, Scotland, France and
Ireland, Defender of the Faith,
&c.”, and several pages featuring
the coat of arms of the works
benefactors follow. The first section
contains an “Encyclopedy of the
Arts and Sciences” and covers
a wide variety of subjects from
mathematics and theology to
military sciences and fortifications
as well as the arts. The second section “Treats of Horsemanship, Hawking,
Hunting, Fowling, Fishing, and Agriculture.” For outdoorsmen, this second section
is particularly fascinating as it details various methods used in the pursuit of
a variety of game in the 17th century in great detail. The leather-bound book
measures 16 3/4 inches tall by 10 5/8 inches wide and 2 1/8 inches thick.
CONDITION: Very fine. The book remains in exceptional condition considering
its age and has mild wear on the cover, light foxing, some additional stains,
crisp illustrations and text throughout, and fairly minor overall wear.

Rare Books: “Scott Collection
of Arms & Armour” in Three
Volumes Plus a Photostat Copy
- The full title is “Catalogue of the
Collection of European Arms &
Armour Formed at Greenock by R.L.
Scott” described by Felix Joubert,
F.S.A. (Scot.) and published in 1924.
Each volume is approximately 18
3/8 inches tall by 13 1/8 inches wide
and 1 1/4 inches thick and contains
illustrations and descriptions of a
wide variety of arms and armour
from Robert Lyons Scott’s (1871-
1939) collection. Scott was the
chairman of Scott Shipbuilding and
Engineering Company in Greenock
and built an impressive collection.
His c. 1936 portrait in the National
Galleries of Scotland shows him
seated with his dog by his side and
part of his arms and armour collection
in the background. Much of his
collection is now part of the Arms &
Armour Collection at the Glasgow Art
Gallery and Museum. This book was
acquired by Norman R. Blank from
Francis Edward Ltd. in July 1958.
CONDITION: Good with mild shelf
wear, some foxing to the pages, some
spine separation and loose pages,
distinct images and text, and some water damage
and spotting.

in 1881. This is no. 143
of 500 copies printed
for sale. It features 54
colored plates depicting Scottish armor, weapons, and accoutrements. The
book is hard cover with a leather spine and measures 16 1/2 inches tall by
13 inches wide and 1 1/2 inches tall.
CONDITION: Good with mild shelf wear, some separation, minimal
staining, and distinct lettering and images.
