Joslyn Model 1855
“Monkey Tail” Breech

Saddle Ring Carbine
- NSN, 54 cal., 22 1/2 inch round bbl.,
brown/casehardened finish, walnut stock. Only 1,500 of these Joslyn
“Monkey Tail” carbines are estimated to have been manufactured by
Asa H. Waters of Millbury, Massachusetts between 1855-1856, and were
the last firearms manufactured by Asa H. Waters. The Waters family had
been involved in U.S. martial arms contracts since at least the 1808 contract
muskets. These Joslyn carbines are known to have been issued to the 2nd, 3rd,
4th, and 6th Ohio Cavalry regiments in limited numbers. Features a large pinched blade front sight, ladder rear sight, and a left
mounted saddle bar and ring. “A.H. WATERS & Co/MILBURY MASS” marked on the lock, “PATd BY/B.F.JOSLYN./AUG.23.1855” marked
on top of the breech block in reference to inventor Benjamin F. Joslyn. “B1” marked on the left of the breech block and on the right of the brass
barrel band. Period hand carved initials “WBC” on the lower tang. W. Roebling III brass collection tag inventory numbered “116” hanging from the trigger guard.
CONDITION: Exceptionally fine, retains 85% original brown finish on the barrel, 60% original case colors strongest on the breech block with a smooth gray appearance on the lock and hammer,
some scattered light surface freckling, attractive original golden aged patina on the brass, and sharp markings on the lock and breech block. Stock is very fine with attractive original raised grain
and rich oil finish, a few scattered light scratches and dents, and distinct edges overall. Mechanically excellent. An exceptional example of a very scarce Joslyn “Monkey Tail” carbine that would
make an excellent addition to any U.S. martial arms collection!

Exceptional Civil War U.S. Joslyn Model 1864
Saddle Ring Carbine - Serial no. 9331, 52 RF cal., 22
inch round bbl., blue/casehardened finish, walnut stock.
This is an exceptional example of a Civil War Joslyn rimfire carbine.
Approximately 8,000 Model 1864 Joslyn breech loading carbines
were purchased by the Ordnance Department during the Civil
War. Pinched blade front and three-leaf flip-up rear sights. It has
the correct hooded firing pin and breech block release knob
that distinguishes the Model 1864 carbine from the Model 1862
carbine. Matching serial number “9331” marked on the breech
block and upper tang. Two boxed script “FDL” inspection cartouches stamped on
the left stock flat above the saddle ring bar, with small “G.W.S” inspection initials stamped on the left of the
breech, small “F.D.L” inspection initials on top of the stock ahead of the buttplate, and “US” marked buttplate tang.
CONDITION: Exceptionally fine, retains 85% original blue finish on the barrel and sights, 80% vivid original case
colors on the lock, breech block, trigger guard, saddle ring bar plate, barrel band, and buttplate, with scattered
surface freckling, and sharp markings and edges in the metal overall. Stock is excellent with distinct edges, a few
small nicks and light scratches, and exceptionally crisp cartouches. Mechanically excellent. This exceptional Joslyn
Model 1864 carbine would be a prime addition in any Civil War or U.S. martial arms collection!
