Gilt Saxon Trabanten Guard Powder Flask - An essentially identical powder flask identified for the Bodyguard of the Prince-Elector of Saxony
(Saxon Trabanten Guards) c. 1600 is on view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 375 ( Accession Number: 28.195.3). The black and gold coloration
matches the Saxon coat of arms and coordinated with other components of the bodyguard’s equipment. The body of the flask is 6 5/8 inches tall and
6 7/8 inches wide at the base by 2 inches deep. The flask has gilt brass panels featuring primarily scrollwork, and the front piece has the Electorate of
Saxony coat of arms featuring crossed swords on the left and crancelin on the right and of the Archmarshalship of the Holy Roman Empire. The flask
is fitted with golden and black suspension cord and tassels, and the spot has a cover on a chain that can serves as a powder measure.
CONDITION: Very fine with bright gilt fitting, mild age and storage related wear, the back section of the lower right tassel absent, and some fraying.
