Cased Engraved Westley Richards
Percussion Double Barrel Shotgun - Serial no. 2874, 16 gauge, 29 1/4 inch solid rib bbl., brown/casehardened/blue finish, walnut stock. Manufactured
c. 1830-1838. The smoothbore Damascus barrels have a concave rib signed “Westley Richards” in ornate script and a bead front sight. The underside of the barrels are
each marked with “W•R”, “659”, “TH”, and Birmingham proof marks. The breech plugs have pierced platinum plugs and two pairs of platinum bands on the rib extension
flaking scroll engraving. Foliate scroll engraving are featured on the
locks and mounts along with pheasants, masks, and stylized pineapple
finials, The lightly figured stock has a checkered wrist, silver escutcheons, and
a 14 5/8 inch length of pull. The wrist escutcheon is engraved with a swan displayed
and expanded over a torse and the motto “SUO MARTE” (By One’s Own Strength) in a ribband.
The quarter-sawn oak case has a Westley Richards trade label and contains powder and shot flacks, a
capper with a nipple primer, a cap tin, an oiler, a wad punch, a nipple wrench, and a worm.
CONDITION: Good with light original brown finish and gray and brown patina on the barrels,
dark aged patina on the silver, mostly silver-gray patina on the locks and mounts, mild oxidation
and pitting, repaired left hammer spur, and generally mild overall wear. The re-varnished stock
is also good and has crisp checkering, scattered scrapes and dings, and some chips at the edges.
Mechanically fine. The case and accessories are also good with mild wear.

Rare Early Production Cased
Engraved W. & C. Scott & Son Double
Barrel Pinfire Shotgun - Serial no. 162, 12 gauge, 30 inch
solid rib bbl., brown/blue/casehardened finish, walnut stock. This
early W. & C. Scott & Son pinfire shotgun was manufactured in 1865
based on William M. Scott’s “Scott Spindle” top lever design patented that
October (patent #2752). The Damascus barrels feature a concave rib with a bead front
sight and “W&C SCOTT & SON PATENTEES 7 DORSET PLACE PALL MALL LONDON.”, “162”
on the underside of the right barrel, and London proofs on the flats. The water table is marked with
London view marks and “SCOTT’S PATENT/162”, and the lever is also marked “SCOTT’S PATENT”. The
locks are signed “W & C SCOTT/& SON”. The lower tang is marked “No. 162” The gun features scroll and
border engraving. The checkered forearm features dark horn inlay on the stepped tip, and the buttstock features a checkered wrist, a blank silver escutcheon, and a 14 3/8 inch
length of pull. It comes in an oak case with a variety of loading and maintenance tools.
CONDITION: Very good with 60% original finish, especially vibrant case colors in the protected areas, crisp engraving and markings, and fairly minor overall wear. The wood is
good and has crisp checkering, chipping mainly along the edges of the forearm, and scattered scratches and dings. Mechanically fine. The case and accessories are very good with
mild age and storage related wear. Overall, a very attractive early W. & C. Scott & Son pinfire shotgun.

Cased Engraved John Manton & Sons
Percussion Double Barrel Shotgun
- Serial no. 5039, 20 gauge, 31 3/8 inch solid rib bbl., brown/
casehardened/blue finish, walnut stock. This shotgun’s serial number,
5039, dates to c. 1808, and the gun was later updated to percussion ignition,
possibly in the Manton shop. The Damascus barrels have a concave rib with a blade
front sight, and the underside of the barrels have “D-C5174” Dublin Irish registration marks
and London proof marks flanking the serial number. The matching serial number is also marked on
the forend under the barrels and on the lower tang, and the registration mark is also on the buttplate.
The casehardened breech plugs have platinum bands and plugs. The locks are marked “MANTON”, and
the locks and mounts are engraved with scrollwork, dog scenes, borders, and foliate motifs, including
stylized pineapple finials. The well-figured walnut half-stock has a checkered wrist, silver escutcheons,
a griffin over a torse engraved on the wrist escutcheon, a shadowline cheek piece, and a 14 3/8 inch length of pull. Ramrod absent. It comes in a mahogany takedown case with a
John Manton trade label, “JSS” inscribed on the lid escutcheon, cap tins, powder flask, takedown rod, pouch, and tools.
CONDITION: Fine with mottled brown patina and faded finish on the barrels, traces of case colors on the breech plugs and standing breech, mostly silver gray patina on the locks,
70% original blue on the mounts, distinct engraving, and generally mild overall wear including some minor oxidation and pitting. The refinished stock has attractive figure, mostly
crisp checkering with a fill along the right, mild scratches and dings, and some small repairs. Mechanically fine. An included 2009 invoice from Michael Ehinger indicates he refitted the barrels to the forend and
wedge, repaired the wood below the wedge, reset the case lock catch, and repaired the sprue cutter on the bullet mold. The case and accessories are mostly fine with mild age and storage related wear. Overall, an
attractive case Manton double barrel shotgun.
