Scarce Spanish-
American War Contract U.S.
Winchester Model 1895 Lever Action Musket - Serial no. 17600, 30-40 Krag cal., 28 inch round bbl., blue finish, walnut stock.
The Model 1895 was the first non-detachable box magazine rifle offered by Winchester. This particular Model 1895 was 1 of 10,000
muskets ordered by the United States Army for use in the Spanish-American War. When the ordnance board went to the Winchester factory to
inspect the muskets a large number were rejected for unsubstantial reasons. After much debate the 10,000 muskets passed the inspection and in 1899
100 were shipped to the Philippines and issued to the 33rd Volunteer Infantry Regiment for field testing. After an unfavorable report the guns were returned
to the United States and sold to a New York dealer who shipped the remaining 9,900 muskets to Cuba, many of which eventually ended up in Mexico in the service
of Pancho Villa’s revolutionaries, fighting against the same government that had originally ordered them. The top of the receiver ring is marked “US”. The standard three-line address and patent
dates are marked on the left of the receiver and the two-line trademark and model marking are on the upper tang. The serial number is marked on the lower tang and “K.S.M.” is marked on the
left of the lever and hammer. It is fitted with a pinned and ramped blade front sight, military pattern folding ladder rear sight, and sling swivels on the barrel band and bottom of the stock. It is
mounted with a full length, musket-pattern forearm with upper handguard and a straight grip stock with a trapdoor military pattern buttplate (cleaning rod not included).
CONDITION: Good, retains faint traces of the original blue finish with the balance mostly a smooth grey patina and some scattered light pitting. The refinished wood is fair with numerous
scattered dents and scratches. The mainspring is slightly weak, otherwise mechanically fine.
Estimate: 2,250 - 3,500

Antique Winchester Model 1873 Lever
Action Musket in .44-40 W.C.F. - Serial no. 459939B, 44-40
WCF cal., 30 inch round bbl., blue finish, walnut stock. Manufactured in 1893, this musket is a third model with integral dust cover rail and dust cover with
serrations at the rear. Many of the later production muskets were shipped to Central and South America in the early 1900s, were apparently never issued, and were
re-imported to the United States in the late 1950s, with many in near new, un-fired condition. The top of the barrel is marked with the two-line address/King’s patent
marking ahead of the rear sight and the caliber marking at the breech. The model designation is marked on the upper tang, and the serial number is on the lower,
with the caliber designation repeated on the bottom of the cartridge elevator. It has the distinctive 30 inch barrel fitted with a block base blade front sight/bayonet
lug and a military pattern folding ladder rear sight. It is mounted with the full length forearm that is retained with three barrel bands and a straight grip stock with
sling swivels on the middle and the bottom of the buttstock, which is fitted with a trapdoor military pattern buttplate (cleaning rod not included).
CONDITION: Very good, with 30% of the original blue finish, the balance thinning to mostly a smooth brown patina, and some scattered patches of light spotting/
surface oxidation. The wood is also very good with the forearm lightly sanded/re-oiled and some scattered minor handling marks throughout. Mechanically excellent.
Provenance: The David L. DeLullo Jr. Collection.
Estimate: 1,800 - 2,750
LOT 1022
Winchester Model 1866 Lever Action Musket - Serial no. 31855, 44 Henry RF cal.,
27 inch round bbl., blue finish, walnut stock. Manufactured in 1870, this Winchester
Model 1866 musket was made when large swathes of the American Frontier sat waiting
to be tamed. While it is more often the carbine and rifle variations associated with the Wild West,
the musket variations such as this would have been of equal use with their ability to fix a bayonet in last ditch defense.
In collector’s terms, these muskets are also significantly more rare than the other two, with 3/4 of the total Model 1866
production being carbine, and of the remainder, rifles outnumbering muskets two to one. The top of the barrel on this third model is marked with the
standard two-line address and King’s patent marking and the serial number is on the lower tang just behind the trigger in block numerals. The partial matching serial number, “1855”, is marked
in the stock inlet and inside the buttplate. It is fitted with a set of period replacement sights including a blade front and an unidentified combination notch and folding ladder rear sight. It is
mounted with a smooth forearm and straight grip stock with filler screws in the sling swivel plate on the bottom and a trapdoor military style buttplate containing a four-piece cleaning rod.
CONDITION: Good, with the iron showing a grey patina speckled with darker brown-grey patina and a few patches
of light surface pitting. The very good brass shows an attractively aged patina with some scattered minor dings
and tight fitting side plates. The wood is also good with a hairline crack in the forearm and some scattered minor
handling marks. Mechanically fine.
Provenance: The David L. DeLullo Jr. Collection.
Estimate: 1,800 - 2,750

30 WCF cal., 20 inch round bbl., blue finish, gumwood stock. Manufactured in 1914, the top of the barrel and receiver at the breech are
marked with the standard Winchester oval proofs. The left of the barrel has the standard two-line address and patent date, two-line nickel
steel marking, and the caliber marking at the breech. The upper tang has the three-line model and trademark information while the serial
number is on the bottom of the receiver. The left side of the stock is stamped with “646/CITY OF TORONTO”. It is fitted with a pinned blade front sight,
folding ladder rear sight, and a saddle ring on the left of the receiver. It is mounted with a smooth forearm and straight grip stock with a carbine buttplate.
