Exceptional First Year Production Winchester Model 53 Lever Action
Sporting Rifle with Three Digit Serial Number - Serial no. 797, 25-20 WCF cal., 22 inch round bbl., blue finish,
walnut stock. Winchester produced only about 25,000 Model 53s from 1924 to 1932. This model was in fact a
slightly more modern version of the Model 1892. It was available in only one style, the Sporting Rifle with a 22 inch tapered
barrel. This example was manufactured early in the first year of production, 1924. The rifle features a Lyman blade front and sporting rear
sights, half-magazine, smooth forearm with a steel end cap and straight grip stock with a steel serrated flat buttplate. The barrel is marked with the two line address on the right rear, model,
trademark, caliber designation and “NICKEL STEEL” on the left side and standard three line trademark marking on the upper tang and the serial number on the bottom of the receiver.
CONDITION: Excellent plus. The rifle retains 98% original bright blue finish with a small area on the bottom and left side of the receiver where the finish has flaked and there are a few tiny dings on the upper
left side edge of the receiver. The wood is also excellent plus with only a few very minor dings on the underside of the forearm. The markings are sharp and clear. Mechanically excellent. It would be nearly
impossible to improve on this rifle.
Estimate: 5,500 - 7,500
