Documented Special Order Winchester Deluxe Model 1886 Extra Light Lever
Action Rifle in .45-70 W.C.F. with Factory Letter - Serial no. 141259, 45-70 WCF cal., 26 inch part octagon bbl., blue finish, walnut stock. Manufactured
in 1907, this is a fine example of a highly optioned, special order, Winchester deluxe Model 1886 rifle. The included factory letter lists the rifle in .45-70 caliber
with a 26 inch, half octagon, smokeless/nickel steel barrel, 2/3 length magazine, extra lightweight configuration, plain trigger, Lyman combination and flat top
sights, and a checkered, pistol grip, English walnut stock with a shotgun butt fitted with a Silvers recoil pad. It also lists receipt at the warehouse on 2 July 1907,
shipment on 9 July 1907, and another received in warehouse date of 5 February 1908 with the additional notation of “22 inches”. The meaning of the final notation is unclear,
as the lightweight profile 26 inch barrel is clearly original to the rifle. This combination of special order features make this rifle very rare, but two specifically are extremely scarce. John
T. Madl’s survey of Model 1886 carbine records indicates that only two in the ledgers were ordered with the Silvers recoil pad, indicating a similar rarity in 1886 rifles. The English walnut wood is also incredibly
scarce, with only three Model 1894s ordered with it out of 353,999 records, a ratio that is likely similar during Model 1886 production. The rifle has the standard Winchester factory oval proofs on the barrel and receiver,
the standard two-line address and patent dates on the top barrel flat, and the caliber marking at the breech. The upper tang is marked with the three-line model and trademark information, while the lower tang has the serial
number and patent dates. The left side of the lower tang is marked “386 XX”, with “386” repeated in the stock inlet. It is fitted with a Lyman combination front sight, elevation adjustable flat top notch rear sight, and a peep sight
mounted on the upper tang. It is mounted with a very nicely figured, H-pattern checkered, English walnut forearm and pistol grip stock with a shotgun butt fitted with a red Silvers recoil pad.
CONDITION: Fine, retains 40% of the faded original blue finish and traces of original case colors on the lever and hammer, with the balance mostly a grey-brown patina, a few patches of light spotting, and a series of light dings on
the left of the receiver. The refinished wood is very good with numerous scattered minor handling marks and well-defined checkering. Mechanically excellent. A fine Model 1886 with a rare set of special order features!
Provenance: The James D. Conaway Collection, The Lewis & Leyton Yearout Collection, The David L. DeLullo Jr. Collection.
Estimate: 6,500 - 8,500

LOT 1004
Antique Special Order Winchester “Semi-Deluxe” Model 1894 Takedown Lever Action Rifle - Serial no. 135897, 30 WCF cal., 26 inch part octagon
bbl., blue finish, walnut stock. Per the Madis serial number data published by Winchester, this rifle is legally an antique. The Winchester Collectors Association
indicates the rifle was manufactured in 1901. Often termed a “semi-deluxe”, these Model 1894s with I-pattern stock checkering are actually more rare than their
deluxe model counterparts which have H-pattern stock checkering. In the survey data published by Oswalt and Hawk of the 353,999 existing Model 1894 records, 26,934
are listed as takedowns, 17,768 with shotgun butts, 26,579 with half magazines, and 10,512 with checkered stocks, the majority of which were the deluxe H-pattern. The top
flat of the part octagon barrel is marked with the standard two-line address and caliber marking, while the two-line nickel steel marking is offset on the left. The upper tang is marked with the three-
line model and trademark information, while the serial number is on the bottom of the receiver. The left side of the lower tang is marked “13474 S”, the butt marked “94/T/13474”, and the inside of the buttplate
marked “13474”. It is fitted with a Lyman beaded blade front sight and an elevation adjustable flat top notch rear sight. It is mounted with an I-pattern checkered forearm and pistol grip stock with a smooth steel shotgun
buttplate and a hard rubber grip cap.
CONDITION: Fine, retains 60% of the original blue finish, 50% of the original case colors, and 30% of the nitre blue on the loading gate with the balance having thinned to mostly a smooth grey patina on high spots and some
scattered patches of light spotting and surface pitting. The wood is also fine with non-factory initials on the bottom of the forend and some scattered light handling marks overall. Mechanically excellent.
Estimate: 5,500 - 8,500
