LOT 1084
Attractive Documented Factory Engraved Remington Over/Under Derringer with
Unique Upside Down Patent Marking and Case - Serial no. 1779, 41 RF cal., 3 inch
solid rib bbl., nickel finish, pearl grips. Manufactured c. 1868-1869, this is one of only
approximately 130 of this variation of Remington over/under derringer manufactured. The
design was patented by William H. Elliot on December 12, 1865, Remington’s classic over/
under derringers, aka the “Double Derringer” or “Model 95,” are undoubtedly among the
most iconic pocket pistols of the American West. This is a very rare variation, as discussed
on p. 102-104 of “Dr. William H. Elliot’s Remington Double Derringer” by
Drummond, Johnson, Williams, and Barnard, where this specific derringer
is listed by serial number. This variation shows the Remingtons address
on the left side rib between the barrels, while the Elliot’s patent marking
is on the right side stamped upside down. The sides on which the
barrel address and patent information are located are reversed from
standard models. As previously noted, only approximately 130 of this
variation are estimated to have been manufactured, and the previously
mentioned book only identifies 13 known examples which have survived,
including this one. The barrels and frame show near full coverage floral
scroll engraving which continues down the back strap. The matching
serial number is on the left of the grip frame, and the bottom of the lower
barrel. It is fitted with integral blade and notch sights and a pair of smooth
pearl grips. Includes a hardwood case with key and fitted for the derringer,
included cleaning rod, and eight included cartridges.
CONDITION: Good, retains traces of the period replated nickel finish with
the balance a smooth bright grey patina, some scattered patches of light
pitting, and some of the engraving slightly softened. The grips are very fine
with only the slightest handling marks. Mechanically excellent. The case is
very fine with minimal handling/storage wear on the exterior and mild wear
on the interior.
Estimate: 1,800 - 2,750
LOT 1082
Scarce E.
Remington &
Sons “Dog’s
Head” Grip .22
Rimfire Cane Gun with Unique
Bead Front Sight - Serial no.
731, 22 RF , 26 3/4 inch round
bbl., black finish, gutta percha
grips. The Remington Percussion
Cane Gun was patented by
John F. Thomas, Remington’s
master mechanic, on 9 February
1858. The Remington cane guns
have the distinction of being
the first metallic cartridge long
arm produced by Remington.
Remington was also the only
major U.S. manufacturer to
produce cane guns. Cane guns
and swords were popular with
European gentlemen in the 19th century, with
canes being considered an essential part of
a gentleman’s wardrobe in the Victorian Era.
Due to the increase in street crime in both
European and American cities, the need for
a defensive weapon while still wanting to
look sharp helped promote the production of
these weapons. Remington advertised “The
Remington Rifle Cane” as “Just the Thing for
Taxidermists” and as “Protection against Dogs
and Highwaymen.” This example is one of
approximately 2,000 originally manufactured in
.22 RF. Along with that, this particular example
has the “dog’s head” handle, which is fashioned
out of black toned gutta percha. Though the
“dog’s head” handle is not necessarily the
scarcest handle variation seen on these canes,
it is often cited as the most desirable. There is
a silver band on the upper/grip portion of the
cane. It has also been fitted with an iron band
2 inches back from the muzzle that has a bead
front sight. The shaft is sleeved in similar black
gutta percha as the handle. The shaft is tipped
with a reproduction iron ferrule at the muzzle
which is marked with the typical Thomas patent
marks, Remington address, and “731”.
CONDITION: Very good, with the gutta percha
showing mostly an attractively aged chocolate
brown tone and some scattered light handling
marks and repairs visible on the center of the
shaft. The reproduction ferrule tip shows a
mixture of blue finish and grey patina, recut
markings, and appears to be permanently
attached. Mechanically excellent.
Estimate: 4,500 - 7,000

LOT 1083
Very Scarce Remington Elliot’s Patent Ring Trigger “Zig-Zag” Derringer with Case - Serial no. 436, 22 RF cal., 3 1/4 inch fluted cluster bbl., nickel finish, gutta percha
grips. Less than 1,000 of these small pocket pistols were manufactured in 1861-1862. These were the first Remington firearms designed to fire metallic cartridges, with
period advertisements listed them as “Elliott’s Pocket Revolvers.” Many have been lost or destroyed leaving few to fill their places in advanced Remington collections. They
are difficult to find in any condition, let alone in the high condition this example is in. The left side of the frame has the standard three-line Elliot’s patent marking, while the
right of the frame has the standard three-line Remington address. It is fitted with a pin front sight on each of the six barrel ribs, a notch rear sight, and a pair of smooth gutta
percha grips. Includes a walnut case with the interior hand carved to fit the gun, an included rare cleaning rod, as well as some cartridges (not included).
CONDITION: Very fine, retains 85% of the period retailer plated nickel finish with a few scattered patches of light flaking and the trigger showing mostly a smooth grey patina.
The butt is polished bright. The grips are also very fine with a few scattered light handling marks. Mechanically excellent. The case is fine as period custom made with some
scattered mild handling/storage wear. A rare opportunity to fill that void in your Remington collection with an exceptionally high condition Elliot’s patent “zig-zag” derringer!
