LOT 1092
Highly Desirable Blued Finish Remington Model 1875 Single Action Army Revolver - Serial
no. 9, 44-40 WCF cal., 7 1/2 inch round bbl., blue finish, walnut grips. While limited in production to only
approximately 25,000-30,000 revolvers between 1875-1889, many of these “Improved Army” or “Frontier Army” revolvers
saw hard use in the hands of Native Americans, settlers, and lawmen in the West. The Model 1875 was Remington’s answer to the
Colt Single Action Army and is arguably a more solid firearm with fewer main components than Colt’s revolver, but it simply suffered in
the famous “Peacemaker’s” shadow. Handling one of these revolvers, it is easy to see that a gunslinger in the American West that truly
knew their firearms might prefer one of these over the hype of the Colt Single Action Army, especially given they could be just as easily
paired with a Winchester Model 1873 as a Colt Frontier Six Shooter. Marked “E. REMINGTON & SONS. ILION. N.Y. U.S.A” on top of the barrel.
The serial number is marked on the left side of the grip frame under the grip and matching “9” is marked in pencil on the inside of each grip
panel. Pinched blade front sight and notch rear sight. Fitted with smooth two piece walnut grips with a small “44” stamped on the bottom of
the left panel (indicating .44-40 WCF caliber) and a lanyard ring and stud on the butt. Seldom are these Remington Model 1875’s found in blue
finish as many were nickel plated.
CONDITION: Exceptionally fine, retaining 85% original blue finish with overall thinning and high edge wear with areas of smooth brown and
gray patina. The grips are excellent with some wear and small dings visible on the lower edges. The markings are crisp and clear. Mechanically
excellent. These blued Remington Model 1875s in this exceptional condition are highly desirable! It is one of the better blued finished examples
we have cataloged!
Estimate: 8,000 - 14,000
LOT 1091
Scarce and Desirable Remington Model 1890 Single Action Army Revolver - Serial no. 618, 44-40 WCF cal., 7 1/2
inch round bbl., nickel finish, hard rubber grips. This is a very fine example of one of the estimated 2,000 Model 1890
Single Action Army Revolvers manufactured from 1891 to 1896. The Model 1890 was the successor to the Model 1875
and was intended to be the competitor of the Colt Single Action Army. This model revolver is the most sought after of all of the
Remington produced handguns. The top of the barrel is marked “REMINGTON ARMS CO. ILION, N.Y.” and “44 C.F.W.” on the left side of the
frame just below the cylinder. The serial number is stamped on the left side of the frame under the grip. The revolver has blade front and frame
notch rear sights, lanyard stud with ring mounted on the butt and fitted with checkered grips featuring the “RA” monogram at the top.
CONDITION: Very fine, retaining 90% plus brightly polished original nickel plating, non-factory replacement front sight, handling marks, and a few very
scattered small patches of pitting. The correct grips are replacements, but fine with some softened checkering. Mechanically excellent.
