LOT 3170
Documented, Scarce Black Powder Colt Sheriff’s Model Single Action Army Revolver with Factory Letter - Serial no. 108757, 45 Long Colt cal., 3 1/2 inch
round bbl., nickel finish, antique ivory grips. Manufactured in 1884 in “Sheriff’s Model” configuration with factory documented 3 1/2 inch barrel. The ejectorless
Colt “Sheriff’s Model” Single Action Army Revolver is one of the rarest and most sought after variations of the legendary Peacemaker. In “The Official Record of
the Colt Single Action Army Revolver, 1873-1895” the authors stressed the rarity of the ejectorless SAAs as a whole (barrel lengths ranged from 2 1/2 to 7 1/2
inches in the study) and state that “just under 600 ejectorless Single Action Army revolvers were produced in all calibers from 1882 to the 1930s.” Based on the
authors’ research Colt only manufactured 15 ejectorless SAAs with a 3 1/2 inch barrel in .45 caliber and nickel finish in the 1-164100 serial number range (page
326). Whether on the hip of a lawman, carried by an outlaw or under the counter of a storekeeper’s shop, the “Sheriff’s Model” Colt SAA was at the front lines. This
example has all the appearance of serving as a trustworthy companion. The accompanying factory letter states the revolver was shipped to Schoverling, Daly &
Gales of New York City on March 16, 1887 with a 3 1/2 inch barrel in .45 caliber, nickel finish, and hard rubber stocks. This was a single gun shipment. The revolver
correctly lacks an ejector rod. The barrel has the two-line Hartford address on top. The left side of the frame has the three-line patent marking, and the left side of
the trigger guard is marked “45 CAL.” The revolver wears a period retailer installed grip. Matching serial numbers are found on the frame, trigger guard, and
back strap.
CONDITION: Good, displaying working gun character and patina associated with a frontier issued piece that survived a lifetime in a challenging environment
with the grip having attractive aged mellow appearance and grain pattern. Mechanically fine. A very scarce black powder Colt Sheriff’s Model Single Action Army
revolver that is missing from even the most advanced collections.
Estimate: 6,500 - 9,500
