H.A. Schaffer Signed and Engraved Flintlock American Long Rifle - NSN, 36 cal., 36 1/2 inch
octagon bbl., brown/bright finish, curly maple stock. This likely c. 1840s rifle is signed “H_A_Shaffer” on the heavy
1.15 inch diameter octagonal barrel which has dovetailed blade and notch sights. The lock has simple engraving and is fired
using adjustable double set triggers. Aside from the eagle engraved German silver cheekpiece inlay, the mounts on the curly maple
stock are brass, and the four-piece patchbox has nice scroll engraving. The stock also has some molding on the forend and butt.
CONDITION: Very good as reconverted to flintlock. with gray and brown patina on the
lock and barrel along with some mild pitting, attractively aged patina on the mounts,
and mild overall wear. The stock is good and has spliced repairs at the breech
and toe, a few cracks, loose patchbox border, and mild scratches and dings.
Mechanically fine.

Engraved Pair of John Krider Philadelphia Flintlock Dueling Pistols -A) Krider Dueling Pistol - NSN, 60 cal., 9 1/2 inch
octagon bbl., brown/casehardened finish, walnut stock. John Krider (1813-1886) of Philadelphia apprenticed under Prosper
Vallee starting in 1826 and purchased his master’s shop on the northeast corner of Second and Walnut in Philadelphia by 1839
and ran it as a leading gun and sporting goods store. This pair was likely originally produced as percussion dueling pistols. They
have smoothbore barrels with dovetailed blade front sights, “PHILADA” marked on top, and notch rear sights and scroll
engraving on the tangs. The locks are marked “KRIDER” and have sliding safeties. The British style trigger guards have
stylized pineapple finials and martial trophy engraving. The stocks have checkered wrists.
CONDITION: Very good as “retroverted” to flintlock with dark brown patina overall, mild oxidation, faint cracks in the stock, crisp checkering, and general mild
wear including some scratches and dings on the stock. Mechanically fine. B) Krider Dueling Pistol - NSN, 60 cal., 9 1/2 inch octagon bbl., brown finish, walnut stock. See “A.”
CONDITION: Very good as “retroverted” to flintlock with dark brown patina and finish on the metal, mild oxidation/pitting, chipped rear sight, crack in the stock, and general mild wear including ding and
scratches on the stock. Mechanically fine.

LOT 3273
Engraved Flintlock American Long Rifle - NSN, 46 cal., 44 1/4 inch octagon bbl., brown/bright
finish, curly maple stock. This early 19th century style flintlock American long rifle has no identifying markings
aside from the “NOCK/LONDON” marked lock. The swamped octagonal barrel has evidence of rifling and blade and notch
sights. The barrel is attached to the stock with three wedges, each with its own set of German silver escutcheons. The trigger
guard, sideplate, and buttplate are brass. The four-piece patchbox is similar to some early Lancaster rifles and has wavy line border
engraving and opens via a button in the toe plate. The oval cheekpiece inlay is German silver and has some simple wavy line engraving.
The curly maple stock has an incised line along the belly.
CONDITION: Good as reconverted and restored with artificial dark brown patina and finish on the lock and barrel, mild pitting at the breech,
aged patina on the brass and German silver mounts, attractive figure on the stock, repaired cracks and splices, and mild overall wear.
Mechanically fine.

S. Miller Signed, Engraved, Silver Inlaid, and Incised Carved Flintlock American Long
Rifle - NSN, 45 cal., 40 1/2 inch octagon bbl., brown finish, curly maple stock. This smoothbored rifle is signed
“S Miller” on the top barrel flat between the rear sight and breech and has a matching patch box design and Roman nose
stock profile seen on other known S. Miller rifles. It was built either by Simon Miller or Samuel Miller of Pennsylvania. The Kentucky
Rifle Foundation notes, “Simon Miller worked in the borough of Hamburg, Windsor Township [Pennsylvania] from the late 1700s to
1806. Miller was a prolific maker of rifles and pistols. His rifle design with the Roman-nose stock and a distinctive patch box design rarely
varied.” The example fits within that trend as it has the same patchbox design seen on other Miller rifles. The tapered octagonal barrel has a
smoothbore, traditional blade and notch rifle sights, wavy line engraving, and “S+Miller” signed on top of the breech section. The lock has
light engraving and a frizzen spring roller. The gun is equipped with a single trigger. The curly maple stock has a “Roman nose” profile,
simple molding, silver crescent moon forend escutcheons, a hunter star inlay on the cheekpiece, incised scroll carving on the left side of
the butt, and brass mounts, including the patchbox which has
scroll and track line border engraving on the lid and wavy lines
at the hinge.
CONDITION: Good as reconverted to flintlock with a mix of artificial dark brown finish and patina along the barrel, dark gray patina and moderate pitting
on the reconverted flintlock which has a resurfaced frizzen and broken cock screw, aged patina on the silver and brass mounts, replacement side plate and
cheekpiece inlay, and cracks and repairs along the stock. Mechanically fine.
