“Omnipotent” is defined by Merriam-Webster as “having complete or
unlimited power,” often associated with deities. It is a name that truly fits the
Model 1878 in powerful .45 caliber. Unfortunately, the “Omnipotent” trade
name did not catch on like “Peacemaker” did for the Single Action Army. As
stated, the left side of the barrel has the incredibly rare “OMNIPOTENT” acid
etched panel. The top of the barrel is stamped with the one-line Hartford
address. “45 CAL” is stamped on the left side of the trigger guard (stamped
multiple times). The full serial number appears on the butt ahead of the lanyard loop,
and the matching partial serial number “726” is found on the loading gate and on the rear cylinder
face with the individual numbers stamped between the chambers. Both of the grips are hand
numbered to the gun. It has standard features including a lanyard swivel on the butt and a pair of
checkered hard rubber grips with Rampant Colts at the tops.
CONDITION: Very fine, retains 70% of the original nickel finish with some scattered mild flaking and
wear showing a mix of grey and brown patina. The original acid etched panel remains very fine
and is well-defined. The grips are also very fine with only the slightest handling marks and crisp
checkering. Mechanically excellent. A very rare variation of Colt’s large frame double action revolver
from the venerable Tom Selleck Collection!
Provenance: The Tom Selleck Collection.
Estimate: 16,000 - 25,000
