Rare Antique Hotchkiss 1.65
Inch “2-Pounder” Model 1875
Breech Loading Mountain
Gun with Carriage - Serial no. 50,
1.65 inch cal., 42 inch round bbl.,
black finish. Manufactured in 1880
by Hotchkiss of Paris, France, this is
a desirable example of a rare 1.65 inch
“2-Pounder” Hotchkiss Model 1875 mountain
gun with carriage. Reportedly, only 56 of these
were manufactured and purchased by the U.S.
Army between the late 1870s to 1890s, originally as a
replacement for the 12-pounder mountain howitzer. These
are considered to be the first breech loading modern cannon in
U.S. inventory. The Hotchkiss mountain guns were well received due to their portability
and light weight, in which they could be easily disassembled and packed on two mules
with 72 rounds of ammunition on each mule.
