Cased Pair of Engraved and Gold and Silver Accented E. & W. Bond
Percussion Dueling Pistols -A) E. & W. Bond Percussion Pistol - Serial no. 8246,
45 cal., 9 1/2 inch octagon bbl., brown/casehardened/blue/silver/gold finish, walnut
stock. These c. 1840s percussion pistols feature smoothbore Damascus barrels with
small post front sights, “45. Cornhill London, Gun Makers to the Honble. E. I. Compy.”
signed on top, “E & W/Bond” signed casehardened breech plugs with gold bands
and pierced platinum plugs, and notch rear sights on the standing breeches. “8246”
is marked on the lower left barrel flat, breech hook, and on the forend under the
barrel of each pistol. The back action locks are signed E & W. BOND.” in banners. The
locks and spurred trigger guards feature foliate, scroll, martial trophy, and border
engraving. The pistols are fitted with adjustable single set triggers, silver forend
caps and escutcheons, and half-stocks with checkered grips. The wrist escutcheons
are engraved with heraldic escutcheon design from the Folliott family’s coat of
arms. The mahogany case’s lid escutcheon is engraved with a lion and torse crest
above the name “George Folliott.” George Folliott, Esq. (1801-1851) of Chester,
son of William Harwood Folliott purchased Vicars Cross House in 1838 and owned
multiple noted works of art (see p. 49-50 of “The Mansions of England and Wales...”
by Edward Twycross). The interior of the case lid features a large trade label with the
coat of arms of the East India Company above the trade label of E. Bond. The case
contains a leather wrapped powder flask, covered worm and measure attachments,
oiler, “62” marked ball mold, and a nipple wrench.
