Civil War Era 1864 Dated Vermont Marked Cannon
with Carriage - , 2 1/4 inch cal., 48 3/4 inch round bbl., black
finish. This Civil War cannon was manufactured in 1864 per the
date markings, with a smooth bore measuring approximately 2
1/4 inches in diameter. The face of the muzzle is marked with partly
legible markings that appear to read “MFC & CO”, restamped “322
LBS”, “1864” and “M. TWN”. The trunnions are marked “R.P.R./BSF” on the
left with “M.F.Co/1864/VERMONT” on the right. The overall style of the
cannon is proper for the light guns of the Civil War. Various 6-pounder
guns are described in the book “Field Artillery Weapons of the Civil War”
by James Hazlett, Edwin Olmstead, and M. Hume Parks, with a similar
looking smoothbore 6-pounder bronze James gun pictured on page 48.
Includes a wooden carriage and rods. Consignor notes state the carriage was
professionally built using parts from Matthew Switlik of Museum and Collector
Specialties. The tube measures approximately 55 inches from muzzle to cascabel,
with a 48 3/4 inch inside bore length, with overall measurements including the
carriage approximately 84 inches long by 50 inches wide by 42 inches tall.
CONDITION: Very good, retains nearly all of the thickly applied glossy black painted finish on
the tube with faint markings and pitting visible underneath the aforementioned finish. Carriage
is very fine with most of the green and black painted finishes.
