In addition to his business activities, Captain Hegeman served in the New
York National Guard from 1892 to 1913 and served in particular as an
assistant inspector of small arms practice, inspector of small arms practice,
and ordnance officer. With wealth, connections, and a keen interest in firearms,
Hegeman was able to assemble a very impressive collection primarily centered
on Colts, including numerous factory prototypes, serial number one guns, and
special order firearms tailored to his specific tastes.
The revolver has the distinctive Bisley Model features which include the higher
frame, humpback grip and back strap, curved hammer with wide knurled spur, wide
checkered trigger, and two-piece special order deluxe checkered walnut humpback grips. Features a
beaded blade target front sight and dovetail mounted notch rear sight, and a unique matted flat top of the
frame. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the one-line Hartford legend, with “(BISLEY MODEL) 44-S&W.”
on the left of the barrel. The left side of the frame is roll-stamped with the two-line, three-date patent markings
followed by the encircled Rampant Colt trademark. Matching visible full serial numbers on the frame, trigger
guard, and back strap, with matching “647” on the rear face of the cylinder, and assembly number “89” on the
loading gate.
CONDITION: Excellent overall, retains 95% plus original bright high polish blue finish with a few spots of flaking
on the cylinder, a few light handling marks, and crisp checkering on the exceptionally fine grips. Mechanically
