This revolver is pictured on page 88 of “The Book of Colt Firearms” by
Sutherland and Wilson and is noted as from Robert Q. Sutherland’s
collection. The caption notes: “Serial #6293, Second Model Dragoon,
the cylinder motif with the U.S. DRAGOONS marking. This is an
unusually low number for the 2nd model and may have been a factory
prototype. Originally in the John R. Hegeman collection, several of
whose Colt pieces were acquired directly from the factory at the turn of
the century.” In his included letter, R. L. Wilson wrote that he planned to
feature this revolver in “The Book of Colt Firearms-II” and states: “In such
extraordinary condition that it retains six original safety pins, and has
no pitting whatsoever, the Serial No. 6293 Second Model Dragoon set
represents the pristine state seldom observed on any Colt Dragoon of
any model...The cylinder scene is as crisp as the day it was rolled, and
is the best and sharpest ever observed by the writer on any Dragoon
Colt revolver...Cased Second Model Dragoon No. 6293 has survived in a
remarkable state. As a possible prototype of the Second Model series,
one of the earliest Second Model Dragoons, and ranked among the
finest known, cased set No. 6293 is fully worthy of the finest museum
or private collection of fine American firearms and history.”
CONDITION: Excellent plus with 98% plus bright original blue finish
and 99% vivid original case colors overall. This is as good as it gets. Colt
Dragoons in anything closer to mint condition are nearly impossible to
find. The revolver exhibits only minor age and storage related wear. The
markings, including the cylinder scene and desirable “U.S. DRAGOONS”
marking, remain extremely crisp. The grip is also excellent and has only
some slight storage marks. Mechanically excellent. The case is very
fine and has some mild scrapes and dings on the exterior, a few cracks,
mars on the front facing edge. The accessories within are also excellent
with minimal age and storage related wear, and the flask has nearly all
of the original finish. Given this revolver’s extraordinary condition, and
its well-documented unbroken chain of ownership back to the Colt
Factory Collection in the late 19th century, we believe this to be the
first of its type! All in all, this is one of the most incredible percussion
Colts you’ll ever set your eyes on!
