Etched and Engraved Springfield Arms Co. Warner’s Patent Navy Model Revolver - Serial no. 42, 36 cal., 6 inch round bbl.,
blue/casehardened/silver finish, burl walnut grips. Only approximately 125 of these
single trigger Navy Model revolvers were manufactured c. 1851 by the Springfield
Arms Company, with roughly an equal amount also made with a dual trigger, per
“Flayderman’s Guide” (9th Edition, 7A-101, 7A-102). The Springfield Arms Company was
founded in the early 1850s and manufactured several variations of revolvers based
on James Warner and Elijah Jaquith patents. However, Colt sued the company for
patent infringement almost immediately, and the company was quickly forced to stop
production of these Warner revolvers less than a year later. This example is marked
“”SPRINGFIELD ARMS CO.” on the top strap, with “WARNER’S PATENT” and “JAN 1851”
on the right of the frame, and with martial themed deluxe acid etchings and floral
engraving throughout. “42” marked on the right of the grip frame and interior of the
left grip panel. Includes a very scarce period mahogany presentation case with fitted
maroon felt lined interior containing a powder flask, Springfield Arms Co. marked dual
cavity brass bullet mold, sealed pack of D.C. Sage .36-100 cartridges, Eley Bros cap tin,
lead balls, “L” shaped combination tool, and a key.
CONDITION: Exceptionally fine, retains 80% plus original blue finish, strongest on the
raised sections, with smooth brown patina on the balance, and 90% plus original silver
plated finish with an attractive darkened blue/black appearance, vivid patterns of
original case colors on the loading lever and hammer, and crisp acid etching and engraving throughout. Grips are also exceptionally fine, with much of the original glossy piano varnish finish, tight fitment, scratches and dents, and
distinct edges. Mechanically excellent. Case is fine, with a crack on the lid, and mild age related wear on the interior. This outstanding factory presentation cased highly embellished Springfield Arms Co. Warner’s Patent Navy Model
revolver would make a fine addition to any antique American firearms collection!
