inch round bbl., bright finish. Manufactured in 1861, as dated on the trunnion, by the Tredegar
Foundry of Joseph Reid Anderson & Co. in the Confederate capitol of Richmond, Virginia. Rock
Island Auction Company is honored to have the privilege to be able to offer this extremely
rare Confederate Tredegar Foundry 6-pounder bronze field gun, the only example of its kind
we have ever offered. This example is listed by its foundry muzzle number 1130 as a known
example on page 262 of “Field Artillery Weapons of the Civil War” by Hazlett, Olmstead, and
Parks, where the book has the remark “Ridgefield NJ; stamped for North Carolina.” There were as
few as 29 originals reported to have been manufactured at the Tredegar Foundry through July
1862, while bronze was available to do so, according to relevant information on page 64 of the
aforementioned book. The very limited amount of surviving examples are mainly in National
Parks, with examples almost never offered for sale today.
