The top of the barrel is marked with the standard two-line address and King’s patent
markings, and it correctly lacks caliber markings as .44-40 W.C.F. was initially the only
caliber offered and was considered the standard chambering. There are London proofs
on the upper left of the barrel and receiver ring at the breech. The upper tang has the
standard model marking, and the serial number is marked on the lower tang. It is fitted
with a block blade front sight, a folding ladder rear sight, and a saddle ring on the left
of the receiver. It is mounted with a smooth forearm and straight grip stock with a
trapdoor carbine buttplate containing an included three-piece cleaning rod.
CONDITION: Excellent, retains 97% plus of the original blue with rarely encountered
original factory polish marks still visible on the frame showing only scattered light
freckling overall. 95% of the vibrant original case colors on the hammer and lever
and 90% plus of the bright original nitre blue on the loading gate. The wood is also
excellent with some scattered light pressure dents and handling marks. Mechanically
excellent. A benchmark example of the iconic Winchester 1873 carbine, perhaps the
finest we have ever seen.
Provenance: Norm Vegely (sold 2007); Herb Glass Jr.; The Pelton Family Collection.
Estimate: 45,000 - 65,000
