Ornate European Wheellock Rifle with Inlaid and Engraved Stock
and Relief Chiseled Barrel - NSN, 54 cal., 31 1/2 inch round bbl., bright
finish, hardwood stock. This beautifully embellished wheellock rifle from
c. 1600 is being de-accessioned from the famous George F. Harding Jr.
Collection at the Art Institute of Chicago (reference number 1982.3313).
The rifle was purchased by Mr. Harding from W. H. Fenton in 1925. It was
remounted with another antique barrel and lock in the late 19th century.
Many similar pieces were purchased by other wealthy collectors as well
as prestigious museums. The barrel has a false “vent” at the breech and a
vent covered by the lock, six-groove rifling, a silver band near the muzzle,
a blade front sight, two leaf rear sight, and relief chiseled decoration
including foliate designs, scrollwork, and classical figures. The lock has a
domed wheel cover and no visible markings. The rifle is equipped with
double set triggers and a finger groove trigger guard. The stock has
extensive engraved staghorn, bone, and/or ivory inlays in scroll, foliate,
martial and animal motifs. The butt has a coat of arms.
