Early 18th Century Pair of Relief Chiseled and Carved Flintlock Holster Pistols by Bearnois of Dresden with Wire
Inlaid Rootwood Stocks -A) Bearnois Flintlock Pistol - NSN, 62 cal., 13 1/4 inch round bbl., bright finish, rootwood
stock. These beautiful flintlock pistols are signed “LE BEARNOIS A DRESDE” on the lower edges of the locks and top of
the barrels. Bearnois of Dresden is identified as active c. 1700 in “Der Neue Stockel.” The pistols feature scroll and mask
chiseling throughout, relief
carved scrollwork on the highly
figured rootwood stocks with
dark horn forend caps, wire
inlays on the wrists, pierced wrist
escutcheons and side plates, and
wood ramrods with light horn tips. The locks have a rare early “rainproof” design in which the bottom of the frizzens are
recessed to fit tightly over the raised rims of the priming pans, and the breech edge of the pans are also enclosed aside
from touch holes.
CONDITION: Very good with mostly bright polished metal with some patination and faint pitting, distinct chiseling
and markings, and general minor age and storage related wear. The refinished stock is also very good and has some
faint cracks, repairs, distinct carving, and
