Very Ornate Inlaid and Engraved Antique Swiss Sporting Crossbow - This stunning crossbow is being de-accessioned from the famous
George F. Harding Jr. Collection at the Art Institute of Chicago (reference number 1982.2189). The Art Institute noted it as a Swiss sporting crossbow
from c. 1600 partially redecorated in the 19th century with scenes from the story of William Tell. It measures 24 7/8 inches across from the tips
of the limbs and 24 1/2 inches long from the stirrup to the butt. The stock features extensive bone, staghorn, and/or ivory inlays with fine foliate
engraving, martial and sporting scenes, castles, and masks. Includes a cord string and a pair of related tags.
CONDITION: Fine with dark brown patina on the iron, crisp engraving, some pieces of inlay absent as well as a few replaced or refitted, an
incomplete trigger mechanism, and mild age and storage related wear. Overall, a very attractive piece.
