Chiseled, Engraved, and Carved Dutch Half-Stock Flintlock Fowling Piece - NSN, 15 gauge, 43 3/4 inch part octagon bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. Though
the gun has no visible identifying markings, the included notes from Norman R. Blank indicate that W. Keith Neal determined this gun “is certainly Dutch.” The gun,
dating to circa 1725, may be the work of J. J. Behr. The long octagonal to round barrel has a rounded brass blade front sight, turned brass girdles at the transition
point, chiseled and engraved scrollwork on the octagonal section, a small brass mask on top, and an engraved brass tang. The beveled lock has a faceted priming
pan, non-bridled frizzen, and scroll and beaded border engraving. The stunning cast and chiseled brass mounts display scrollwork and masks, and the half-length
stock features relief carving en suite with the foliate finials on the mounts. A brass collection tag marked “267” is pinned to the underside of the butt near the toe.
CONDITION: Very good with crisp designs throughout, silver-gray patina on the lock and barrel, light oxidation staining, attractively aged patina on the brass
mounts, absent rear trigger guard finial, crisp carving, scratches and dings on the stock, and fairly minor overall wear. Mechanically fine.
Provenance: The Collection of the Dukes of Saxe-Weimar at Schloss Ettersburg; The Norman R. Blank Collection.
Estimate: 4,500 - 7,500
