Outstanding Documented Factory Engraved
John Dickson & Son 8 Bore Double Barrel
Percussion Shotgun with Original Case and
Accessories Made for the Famed Scottish
Eccentric Charles Gordon - Serial no. 4037, 8
gauge, 32 inch solid rib bbl., brown/casehardened/
blue finish, deluxe walnut stock. This shotgun is
listed on page 85 of “British Gunmakers Volume
Two” by Nigel Brown in the list of guns from Charles
Gordon’s collection and noted as a muzzleloading
8 bore gun manufactured in 1886. It features
beautiful scroll engraving. The concave solid rib is
signed “JOHN DICKSON & SON. 63 PRINCES STREET,
EDINBURGH” and has a bead front sight. The
casehardened breech plugs have floral engraved
platinum plugs. The underside of the Damascus
barrels have “J.D&S” maker’s marks, London proof
marks including the “8” bore marking, and the
serial numbers. The serial numbers are also found
on the breech hooks, and trigger guard tang. The
casehardened back action locks are signed “JOHN
DICKSON & SON.” The gun is equipped with double
triggers, and the casehardened trigger plate and
ramrod entry pipe have stylized pineapple finials.
The trigger guard and buttplate blued. The finely
figured walnut stock has a checkered forend and
wrist, a blank silver initial oval on the underside
of the butt, and a 14 1/4 inch length of pull. The
included brass cornered oak takedown case has a
John Dickson & Son trade label inside the lid, leather
lined interior fitted to the gun and included suite
of loading and maintenance equipment, and is
accompanied by a leather outer cover marked “C.
GORDON ESQ./HALMYRE”.
CONDITION: Excellent with 97% plus original
vibrant casehardened, brown, and blued finish
overall and minor storage related wear. The stock is
exceptionally fine and has a small sliver absent on
the right at the breech, some clouding of the finish,
crisp checkering, attractive figure, and minor wear.
Mechanically excellent. The case and accessories
are very fine with storage wear. Overall, a beautiful
double barrel shotgun by John Dickson & Son from
the famous Charles Gordon collection.
