LOT 1362
World War II German Haenel “fxo 42” MP40
Submachine Gun, Class III/NFA C&R Fully Transferable
Machine Gun, with Magazine Pouch and Extra Magazines - Serial no.
7938o, 9 mm cal., 9 3/4 inch round bbl., blue finish, metal stock. Manufactured
in 1942. The successor to the MP38 submachine gun, the MP40 stands out as one of the signature weapons of World War
II, serving on every front in which the Germans fought, issued to virtually all of their military and paramilitary formations,
and seen in the hands of a broad spectrum of clients, collaborators, and resistors. One of the archetypal “tube guns”
alongside the British STEN and American M3, the MP40 made heavy use of stamped and drawn steel components to
make a weapon that was reasonably inexpensive without sacrificing close combat capability. Blade front and two-leaf
notch rear sights, with “MP40/fxo 42/cos” on the end cap, the “cos” (Haenel) code repeated on the receiver tube and
triggerguard, and matching serial numbers on the sight hood, barrel,
barrel nut, receiver, endcap, buttstock, bolt and firing pin assembly;
no mixed numbers are visible. The traditional brown Bakelite panels
are installed on the sides of the trigger housing and pistol grip, with
a synthetic rest bar on the underside of the barrel and underfolding
metal buttstock. Included with the lot is a late war pattern magazine
pouch, tan cloth construction with black leather hardware, configured
for the left side of the belt, with “MP38u40” and “clg 43” on the belt
loops, “fxo 42” marked loading tool, two extra magazines, and a Model
Gun Corporation replica magazine.
CONDITION: Very fine, 70% plus original blued finish overall, with
areas of brown patina, and mild scratches and handling marks. A
partially ground weld connecting the barrel nut and sling staple,
and a removed weld connecting the charging handle to the receiver;
no harm was done to the breech, bolt face or firing pin during this
deactivation or reactivation. The grip panels are very fine with nice
original color and minor scratches and dings. Mechanically excellent.
The magazine pouch is very good, with mild cracking of the leather
and light stains and scuffs, and the MGC magazine is not compatible
with the item. NOTE: This weapon is a National Firearms Act (NFA), fully
transferable Class 3, which is registered with the Bureau of Alcohol,
Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, (BATFE) that is classified as a “Curios or
Relic” as defined in 27 CFR, 478.11. These weapons are still subject to the
provisions of 18 U.S.C. Chapter 44 and 27 CFR part 479.
